The Cubs threw a curve into the first round of the draft Monday night by picking a Mulerider.

Making the 16th selection overall, the Cubs chose right-handed pitcher Hayden Simpson of Division II Southern Arkansas. He was the ninth pitcher taken in the first round.

Simpson, a 6-foot, 175-pounder, went 35-2 in his three-year career for the Muleriders, including a 13-1 mark this season with a 1.81 ERA. He had 131 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings pitched. Simpson, who gave up only two homers, had a string of 42 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

''I feel Hayden is a potential starter who has four average-to-plus pitches and is very athletic with a good feel for pitching,'' said Tim Wilken, the Cubs' director of amateur and professional scouting. ''We're fortunate to have received really good coverage from our scouts with this selection."

Simpson, 21, was recommended by area scout Jim Crawford.

''I'm so thrilled right now, and I'm extremely excited to be a Chicago Cub,'' Simpson said. ''This is greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm ready to get started.''

Baseball America had Simpson as the 191st pitcher listed on its draft board. He is said to have a low-90s fastball that can hit 96, and a power curve. Scoutingbook.com said Simpson could fit in as a reliever right away or a starter in the future.

How does a kid go from being the 191st pitcher on the board to the 16th overall selection? That's one hell of a jump.

The plan to not win the World Series for at least another 100 years.

With Strasburg and Storen in the majors a year after they were drafted, it is clear that first rounders have the potential to move up quickly. Here are the Cubs recent 1st round selections:

2009: Brett Jackson - still in minors
2008: Andrew Cashner - called up last week
2007: Josh Vitters - still in minors
2006: Tyler Colvin - cup of coffee last year, playing sporadically this year
2005-2002: Bobby Brownlie, Ryan Harvey, Mark Pawelek - all still in minors or out of baseball having never played an inning of MLB
*2004 the Cubs did not have a first round pick. The lost it when they signed......LaTroy Hawkins.

Just to twist the knife a little more, the Cubs have also had five supplemental picks since 2002. Of the five, only one - former AU Tiger Josh Donaldson - has played an inning of MLB and Donaldson is now an Oakland A.

If you care to go back more, you would see some who could not match their hype like Mark Prior and Corey Patterson, some decent major leaguers but nothing spectacular like Doug Glanville and Jon Garland and a bunch of busts. In fact, the only first rounder the Cubs have drafted since Palmeiro who was worth a crap was Kerry Wood, and even his career numbers are not that much better than Garland.

that would make me hate them more than I hate LT and Polk...you almost have to try to be that bad in drafting to actually be that bad

unless he has fallen off the face of the Earth. I think he is in AA, so it will be another year or two for him. Starlin Castro looks like a solid player, to.

Colvin is no more than a warm body or role player...he couldnt start for 3/4 of the teams in the ML....and an article I read this morning listed Vitters still in High A-ball while in his 4th season- not much impact for a 1st round pick

The fact that the best 1st rounders since the mid-1980's are Wood, Garland, Patterson, and Glanville really should make you sick...thats as poor of a scouting job as can be done-

according to minorleaguebaseball.com. He did start out the season in high-A ball, though.

I will say this on your behalf- he is only hitting .211 for them in 24 games, which is obviously not good.
