Great idea - keep race a key element in the new mascot. That would have worked out well...

The reason they got rid of the stallion was because the majority of the support for it was based on it being a live mascot or nothing. Couple that with the fact that it was one of the lesser supported mascots and they scratched it. The support for the black bear wasn't nearly as strongly based on it being a live mascot.

We'll see what the athletic department decides to do with it, but I doubt they're going to push for a live mascot right now.

away with all of their "old south" symbols, songs, and names and they aren't any better than they are now? They think this is going to all of a sudden make them attractive to the "bigtime recruits". The only color that matters to the majority of recruits is green and they have tried that. They just can't understand why florida, alabama, auburn, etc. are better programs than they are.

One finalist had gray-colored skin because, said Margaret Ann Morgan,
19, a committee co-chairwoman, “it is a combination of black and white.”

Wow. Just wow.

From the same article - I did not know that as recently as 1995, Ole Miss's black student enrollment was less than 6% of the student body.
Well hey, I never knew Halle Berry and Lenny Kravitz were gray. You learn something new every day.

A hunch tells me they will do away with any association with the word "Mississippi" and change to something like Oxford University, become a private school and drop to Div. III.

Not betting the farm, just a hunch.

"Similarly, the Rebel Stallion raised excitement with the prospect of having a live horse to lead the Rebels, but the logistical problem of having a live horse in the crowed Grove and the fact that it could not enter into most indoor sporting events led the committee to eliminate this idea as well.

The alternative to a live horse, a costumed horse, did not have strong support among the Ole Miss community."

So, a horse in a costume doesn't cut it but a bear in a costume wins overwhelmingly, go figure.

Yes. The popularity of the horse had to do with having a live one. The popularity of the bear didn't have to do with the possibility of having a live bear. It's not that complicated.

It's about the school as a whole. It's about making our school more welcoming period to all students.

For me personally, I know why Florida, Auburn, Bama, Georgia, LSU, etc. are better programs than us. They have larger alumni bases, larger walk on alumni bases, and better recruiting bases to pick from. It's a real simple formula. The Old South symbols don't help us, but I realize taking them away won't change the other factors that are a much bigger factor in where we stand as a football program.

I still want to see the changes though, because it's the right thing to do, and it's something that should've been done decades ago.
