Female athletes appeal landmark NCAA settlement over back pay | AP News

Imagine a scenario wherein female athletes sue for "equal comp", and win (which is a very real possibility)
and
Football / Mens BB athletes sue for a "fair" slice of the pie - meaning "most of it", since their sports generate the money, and win (which is a very real possibility)

Then what?

And this is just the beginning.
It really should not be difficult. This is about revenue sharing so which sports create revenue. As for NIL in women’s sports it tends to gravitate to a few well known athletes and not much for everybody else.

This is how I expect things to play out. The market will dictate.

While this appears troubling, even if not unexpected, we'd have to know the net reduction/addition of non-revenue, or Olympic, sports in past years to know if this is an outlier, and just how much of an outlier it is.

Anyone have that info?

It really should not be difficult.
That is debatably true.

But anyone following $$$ college sports knows that even the "should be" simple has become a clown show. Just look at the people in charge.
This entire enterprise is far closer to the beginning stages than the end. 5-10 years from now things are very likely to be far different than people think it is today. Some of those changes are rather easily anticipated - some will come out of left field.

Started to reply in the other thread but it got nuked it seems; anyway, agree with @WestSideLion - EO's do not have any real teeth. To make serious reform in college athletics will require congress, and those guys are all looking out for their own states/constituents. I think the settlement was a good place to start but as we're seeing there are still a bunch of unknowns/hurdles/loopholes. College football probably needs to be removed from universities and set up as minor/pro leagues with university affiliations. There needs to be a better way to ensure a level playing field (not just who has the most money to buy talent). Will this ruin the sport? The spirit and university pride people have - for sure. Popularity? Unlikely IMO. But, this whole EO is mostly grandstanding. My guess is Saban has Trump's ear and wants to get things back to the way they were (and with the schools/NCAA having all the power) becuaes Saban sees the writing on the wall for the SEC - they can't sustain the kind of money the Big Ten can (save Texas) in this environment because of the truth Cowherd speaks here...

"What’s changing is money," he continued. "Big Ten schools are bigger, they have more graduates. It’s easier to raise money for NIL. You add in Phil Knight and the Nike money. You add in USC and the LA economy money… Big Ten money is Hollywood, tech, and financial centers. There's a lot of car dealerships in the SEC."

The EO mentioned ensuring deals reflect rel market value. Trump’s the king of manipulating markets to increase value. Colleges can just do the same thing!

Just shut it down.

Just a quick reminder -- please keep politics out of all discussions. There's no way to avoid posting information about, and analysis of, the executive order (EO) that the POTUS signed. But please show some discipline, and discuss the facts of the EO, or the analyses of such, but DO NOT interject your feelings about the politics of the move, or your opinions of the POTUS or any other political entities that speak about this subject.

Both guys are full of crap. The "educational model" never existed, at least not the idealized one so many people long for. If Saban is jonesing for teams on which the players are playing for no money and the sheer love of competition, he should go coach someplace in Division III. I love college sports but my life wouldn't change drastically if they disappeared. The US is the only country where universities are the primary training ground for elite international athletes in most sports. I guess that's OK since, unlike most countries, the US government doesn't fund their own international athletics teams. Same old same old, I suppose - millionaires telling people how things should be.

Imagine if college athletics collapsed. The USOC would be scrambling to fund training centers. They'd be begging for sponsors since the government wouldn't help. And kiss the NFL goodbye unless the owners are willing to spend some of their billions to develop players once their free minor league system is gone.

If Joe was alive and in his prime or late-prime, it would have been him that PDJT turned to.
I totally disagree with this. Contrary to what many believe, Joe was never about the players being locked in the library 24/7. While he certainly felt education was important, he also looked at the college experience as time for personal growth as opposite to being isolated on an athletics island on campus. Joe had players spend freshman year in dorms with other students. He was also one of the first people advocating for players to receive some sort of stipend since they weren’t allowed to work. He was ridiculed for this and the idea was likely shot down by those who had become adept at sliding the bag under the table.

Joe was much more progressive than he’s given credit for. He was in favor of a stipend back when the money was peanuts compared today. There’s no way to know what he would think today’s players deserve.

Stipends to Joe were pizza/date money. Not money that would rival NFL rookie contracts.

You can put your politics aside and consider this as a positive. I do not hold out much hope that anything can be done, but only a guy like Saban and a team of comparable leaders can do it.
So, now we like Saban? When he/Bama was/were paying players under the table, he was a sheister, now he’s going to save “college football”? Color me skeptical.

College football cannot be treated like other college sports simply because of the money involved. It needs to be removed from any conversation about ‘education based’ athletics models. Saban wants things to be the way they were, and the SC has already taken a big huge dump on that idea.
