Just got back from a couple of days in College Station, TX. Picked up a couple of magazines in the hotel, and both featured articles on Jackie. Jackie was at A&M Thanksgiving weekend for the 1st annual Jackie Sherril and the 12th Man KO team Tailgate (did not realize he started that).Had a picture of Jackie in a maroon sport coat and couldn't help but think it was his MSU blazer. Also promoting a new book (I flipped through it- not much to it) "No Experience Required" which was not written by Jackie but about him and the KO team. Saw a picture of Curly Hallman who was one the 1st , maybe the1st special teams coach of the 12th MKOT. They still love their Jackie. Also amazing what unlimited funds can do for a campus. A lot of new buildings everywhere. Student population near 50000.

I knew a big A&M guy when MSU hired Sherrill. He was all pumped about it and always cheered for MSU from that point. Except for that one game in the snow.

It's pretty much a copy of what he did at Texas A&M. But, if I remember correctly, they were KO cover guys and had patches on their unoforms that said "Mad Dawgs" or something like that.

I think it would be cool to bring that back. Maybe like a Mad Dawg of the year, who is essentially the special teams ace or a walk-on on ST or something like that.

It was a direct carry-over from the 12th man at A&M. At first, the special teams unit was supposed to picked from guys on campus - walk ons. My roommate was on the first team.

Jackie soon found that we didn't have enough walk-on talent on campus to fully staff a decent special teams unit. So, he went with scholarship players after that first year. That led to the Dawg Pound Rock and the rest is history.

A co-worker, Aggie alum, said:

Y'all just hired a winner!

The last time I saw Jackie in person, he was wearing a Maroon blazer, at an MSU game, under the stands.
Very friendly, shook hands, pretended to remember me.

That was just a few years ago, during the Croom era.

know a lot of you young guys weren't around prior to JWS coming to MSU, but until then, for the entire time I have supported our Dawgs(50+ years), we had never thought of ourselves as winners...we only hoped to have a fair season and maybe upset $!%! every once and awhile...Jackie changed all of that from the first day he came(was also the first year I ever bought season tickets and haven't missed game since)...yes, I know we had some down years toward the end of his time, but the will to win is still there, and now after a little hard times, is back stronger than ever....Coach Mullen recognizes that and that is why he is close to JWS, and keeps him involved(don't worry, NCAA, he will keep it legal)....Jackie will always be special to MSU...thanks Coach...

or not you liked him. At any rate, they ran him off. Jackie did instill an attitude that resulted in the belief that we can win at State. He is still revered by the Texas A&M folks, but so is Emory Bellard. They don't give a damn what he did or didn't do at State. Aggies just seem to revere all their ex coarches. Jackie is also still hated by Texas, which I think is funny.

35 yers ago and we just haven`t had the right leadership to tap into the people/resources that are here. The "cigar boys" have been very generous and we can`t do without them but the keys are the president and the AD. I believe we finally have the right people in those two positions. Coach Sherrill will always be "The Kang" though.

Emory Bellard did have 2 good seasons..79 & 80 & the big win against #1 Alabama in 80. Allyn Mckeen had a way better winning % than any coach we've had. With our new President, AD , & Mullen as our coach, I really believe we are gonna reach some new heights in our football program & baseball program. Stans will more than likely just keep us mediocre.

against Texas when he took the job at State in '91. Oddly enough we had a home in home with Texas beginning his first year here. I remember being worried that we were going to snap his streak. We went to Austin and kicked their *** and then handed it to em again at home in '92. The night before our game at Texas in '91, the Texas A&M students held one of their infamous bonfire pep rallies..this time in honor of Mississippi State and hopes that Sherrill beat Texas. They love that guy.

we felt a hell of a lot better than the eventual NCAA hand picked "winners".</p>edited to add: I`m assuming everyone here knows that Tyler started the Bulldog Club and the PO Box still bares his initials.

He may have be as nasty as anybody when it came to the game of football but off the field he did many things for others that never get mentioned. I know of a few that he went way beyond the call to help disadvantaged kids out without anybody knowing.

"Jackie speak". He always said wierd things that you kind of had to translate. As you said, after beating Texas in '92 he had a 7 game winning streak against them, after he had lost his first two against them. But in his press conference he said "Well, we're 7-0 against Texas, and we never have to play them again!"

The Texas fans thoroughly enjoyed the 1999 Cotton Bowl.
