You guys realize Rutgers had two lottery picks on their team last season, and missed the tournament. Calipari had five 5 star recruits on the 20-21 roster, and went 9-16.

Pope just over estimated this particularly roster. Hopefully he learns from it.
And the word that shall not be named —- injuries. I’m sorry but it matters, especially the injuries we have had. I have no idea what the shooting numbers would have looked like this year with a fully healthy point guard, but we will never be able to know that now. Awful luck.

They finished 24-12 and in 8th place in the SEC. Let's not re-write history and act like last year was some major success.

Did you expect him to put a title winner together in a month when he inherited nothing but an empty locker room and an LOI from Travis Perry?

If so, the comparisons between UK basketball fans and Dallas Cowboys fans are accurate for some of y’all.

I thought he did a great job last year and is doing a poor job this year.

I have heard that UK has totally backed off on him. Stokes is not going to end up at UK.
Kentucky needs to back off Pope at this point. He can’t recruit worth a **** or atleast his staff can’t. The top recruit looked to be headed to you and you “back off.”

i don’t care how you phrase it at this point. Pope has a major recruiting issue. There’s a ton of guys he’s supposedly backed off from because they weren’t “the right fit” for UK, only for them to be having great years. He either can’t land them, doesn’t have the nil because of JMI or he thinks everyone is a bad fit. It all equals the same outcome which is he’s going to get his *** fired.

When Pope has a killer roster lined up for next season, I don’t want to see anyone who ripped him and called for his head nine games into this season before he has completed next years roster. I will repost your bullcrap on a daily basis
This has to be sarcasm. He supposedly had a ton of talent wanting to play for him after his first year here and you see how many actually talented players came. Maybe 1-2. After seeing this team there will be nobody coming here. His recruiting is as screwed up and dysfunctional as the current team. You’d think as many 5 stars as we’ve been in on and led on up until the decision that he would have atleast gotten lucky and landed one but nope.

If he doesn’t happen to stay past this year then he absolutely has to fire atleast one, maybe two assistants. Hart should absolutely be fired. Brooks and Fox should be looked at too. He’s got to hire a real recruiter. Not hiring Antigua when he had the chance is his biggest screw up to date.

That is what Duke said last year when they played us. Injuries matter. Awful Luck.

But at least Stokes can play...
We have much more talent than we did a year ago. The results are catastrophically worse. I’d rather Pope build for his system, ensuring a snug fit at every role. Whole is better than the sum of its parts sure seemed to work a lot better than the Ferrari to me.

I'll address the elephant in the room:

Joe, are there any recruits that live OUTSIDE the state of Kentucky that want/willing to play for Mark Pope?

If not, what is the issue?
here is what I'll say. part of their issues recruiting this cycle is because when you clearly prioritize Stokes as your No. 1 guy, other players feel that.

You can't commit as much NIL funds to other targets, because you have so much tied up in Stokes.

The interesting part about this recruitment is that it sounds like they were close with Stokes back in October. and then they were close to landing Christian Collins. everything looked like it was trending that way for both of those guys.

now you see all this JMI stuff coming out, and agents not wanting to agree to some of the language in the contract, and it makes you wonder if that had something to do with it.

also, it definitely has an impact on recruits that kentucky has not played well so far this season

Thats why I can't bail. Duke is 10-0 with lots of close wins. What is their record without Carlos Boozer all year, Isaiah Evans for most of it and Caleb Foster for some of it

What makes it lower than ever before, the only reason we had a lead was people like you saying it, we may have never actually lead but the "experts" jump the gun and say we do with nothing ever said from Stokes himself.
everything I say is from trustworthy sources close to the situation. I'll leave it at that

and of course Stokes isn't going to come out and say "Kentucky is my leader" or "Kentucky is now trailing in my recruitment", players don't do that. that is up for guys like me to speak to people with knowledge on the situation and find out where things stand.

recruiting is fluid, it always has been

I believe you and really appreciate all your responses here. But I’m once bitten, twice shy. So I also find myself wondering:

NIL isn’t an issue for this recruitment in Barnhartville? Or NIL isn’t an issue for this recruitment on Planet Earth? What with recent (admittedly anonymously sourced) reporting, I’m starting to suspect those are two very different places.
so when I say NIL is not an issue for Kentucky, I mean the actual dollar amount as to which they can offer is not a problem

the fine print in some of the NIL contracts is viewed as a problem to some

haha I like the optimism! they need to win a lot more first before we can project them to have a killer roster. but I dont think we should be calling for Pope's job yet

not gonna happen, pope has star-less rosters

neither this year or last year got me too excited
dont forget JQ is a former 5-star and projected lottery pick. I know he hasn't played yet, but thats something

Yeah it is fluid which is why I don't understand why everyone runs with every little information they get then a week later everything changes and then you post that, just let it play out until there's a definite direction or a commitment date set.

If everyone accepts that he’s not coming it won’t be as bad when he makes his decision. As somebody else mentioned earlier… asking him to come be our Mashburn is our only hope.
