Reading that article it seems the deal is on treating North Korea, not so much buying coal. China having to replace 10% of their imported coal should be good for our coal companies, so thanks Obama? I mean the UN sanctions were passed last November under his administration. I've always thought China's abrupt slowing of their infrastructure earlier this decade has always been worse for WV coal than the EPA. I do not mean to imply the EPA has played no role.

Either you and I read different articles or have very different interpretations:

"China’s move to ban coal imports from North Korea, effectively slicing the country’s exports by about half, came with a message for the U.S. and its allies: It’s time to do a deal."

Why now? Why not when Obama was in office?

“The Chinese are getting more frustrated with North Korea,” Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer said in an interview at the same conference. “They clearly don’t feel that they have a lot of influence and they’re worried that the U.S. under Trump is going to blame China as opposed to continuing a multilateral process.”

China clearly worried about Trump reaction, not Obama's reaction.

"China’s call for a new initiative contrasts with a more hawkish tone out of Washington. President Donald Trump, who during his campaign said he could negotiate with Kim over a hamburger, this month promised to deal with North Korea “very strongly” after its latest missile test. He also called on China to get tougher. The U.S. is putting a defense system called Thaad in South Korea -- a move that also potentially threatens Beijing’s military capabilities."

Trump has just green lighted THAAD for South Korea.

Trump’s administration has said it will deploy the missile defense system this year in South Korea and back Japan “100 percent” in moves to deter North Korea. It has also signaled a willingness to work with China after sharp criticism on the campaign trail, and Trump has told President Xi Jinping that the U.S. will respect the One-China policy.

While China has previously resisted calls by the U.S. to apply greater pressure on Kim’s regime, North Korea is increasingly becoming a strategic liability, according to Zhou Qi, director of the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Again, don't see Obama's name anywhere. Trump is trying to force their hand. Eliminating Korean imports of coal is a good first step and should definitely help WV coal, which will enrage some liberals that post on this board (not referring to you).

I read the article you linked. My interpretation from the article is China hated Obama's policy towards the North Korea regime and they are ready to deal with Trump in regards to NK. I did not read anything in the article that China was ready to make a deal for US coal. I hope China does start buying an insane amount of US coal, but I didn't read any assurances of that in the linked article.

You may want to check out the title to the article and then reread this quote:

China will need to replace that coal and I think I have a pretty good idea where that coal is going to come from. we are the big dog on the block and China knows they have to deal with Trump. They are not going to make this move and then buy all of their coal from England.

And honestly I have no idea why you gave Obama credit for this.

I gave Obama credit mostly tongue in cheek. The UN resolution that banned NK from exporting coal to China was passed while Obama was still in office. Would China have complied if Obama or Clinton were in office? I honestly don't know. Does China usually comply with UN resolutions they help pass? Again, I don't know.

Replacing NK's coal exports to China should help US coal. How much? And again I read that article as let's make a deal on NK, not as let's make a deal to bring American coal roaring back.

If the ban was passed by the UN under Obama's leadership it was completely ineffectual. China still bought a lot a coal from North Korea. Now the Chinese are worried that Trump is going to blame China for North Korean actions. They're worried about our extending technology into Japan and South Korea. They're worried about our war ships and aircraft carriers currently patrolling the South China Sea.

As the article states they want to make a deal with the US. It is logical that since they're cutting coal from North Korea, they will seek that coal from somewhere else. Not very hard to understand.

And as I said, most liberals will abhor this new direction. Frankly, I expect a lot more deals like this where Chyna agrees to buy a lot more US products.
