The lineup against Florida....

Curious to see what everyone is expecting from our lineup this weekend. This continues to be the most frustrating part of our season to me, because Cohen makes me want to light my hair on fire with some of his lineups.

Hopefully Pirtle batting cleanup was a part of the new "put the names in a hat" lineup theory, that we will never see again. And in regards to matchups.....17 a matchup, and put your best hitters in the lineup.

I don't know what we're going to have to do with Detz, but we have got to find a way for him to play second base or left field. If we are going to put our best offensive team out there, we need Detz, Porter, and Norris all in the lineup. Obviously, unless Detz is in the field, Porter will not play.

Since that makes so much sense though, i'm going to assume we do NOT do it this weekend, but instead go with the usual guys. Here's what I would like to see....

Frazier SS
Pirtle 2B
Renfroe RF
Porter/Detz DH
Rea 1B
Bradford CF
Norris 3B
Slauter C
Henderson/Robson LF

For those that say "Why Norris?": Because Norris is a damn good hitter when he gets reps. And he is a far better fielder than any of us give him credit for. Frost worked his way out of the "defensive specialist" role Tuesday. If Frost comes in, it should be for Pirtle occasionally, not Norris. Norris just needs reps in the field and reps at the plate. He is one of the most highly touted guys on our team, yet he has a shorter leash than Sam MF Frost.

For those that say "We need Detz AND Porter in the lineup": Yep, no doubt. But for some reason a stud JUCO middle infielder (Detz), is somehow unable to even be tried out at middle infield for us. Ideally we would have Detz at one of our two weakest hitting positions, 2B or LF, and then we could have he and Porter both in the lineup. Not gonna happen though. In fact, don't be surprised if Tyler Fullerton DH's against a lefty this weekend. That's how dumb our lineups can get.

For those that say "Why do you think Pirtle shouldn't start? Pirtle is good, we need him hitting": Bull. ****. You just THINK he is hitting well, because he is doing better than his 2-40 start to his MSU career. I will admit that he is better than I gave him credit for early on, but he is not worth taking a Detz or Porter out of the lineup for.....and he damn sure ain't a cleanup man. At the same time, he does have some pop in his bat, so if we're going to play him, put him in the 2 hole so he can see great pitches ahead of Renfroe. Plus, Bradford is struggling a little, but more than capable of having a big game or timely hit....so put him in the bottom half of the lineup so you add a little pop down there.

You put Pirtle batting second and then dump all over him?

I was actually considering hitting him second the other day. He's doing well enough lately to justify it, plus we need to strengthen the bottom of the lineup with an underachieving Bradford. I don't like Henderson or Robson in the lineup. Henderson is a walking mental error, and Robson gets out 82% of the time. Who are you going to put out there, though? It's unfortunate that, as many combinations as Cohen has dreamed up, we haven't put Detz or Porter in the outfield by now. I know Porter played 3B and OF some last year.

SS -Frazier
2B -Pirtle
RF -Renfroe
1B -Rea
DH -Detz/Porter
C -Slauter
CF -Bradford
3B -Norris
LF -Punch/Judy/Porter

If we can get our weekend rotation where it needs to be, 4-6 runs will get us a win almost every time. That's why we need to have guys like Porter and Norris in there. They are doubles guys with power potential. As you can see by last night's game, we don't have to hit .300 to win games. We have to be patient and get a clutch hit.

I really like Pirtle in the 2hole. I think he's just as good there as Bradford.

If Detz can play 2B, then Detz can play LF. I think that would solve our problems... but Cohen doesn't seem to think it's a good idea.

Lets hope he would be better than Bradford. Ct has stunk it up most of the year. I'd like to see Bradford hit 9th. Hopefully he could get on in front of Adam.

yeah. leftfiield and 2B are just alike.........

Cohen should stick him out there, hit him a couple of fly balls and roll with it.

It's really a shame we can't get any offensive production outta lf. If we had a decent fielder at 3b and bat in lf, we'd probably have a winning record in the sec

This should be our lineup

Avg OBP
2B Detz .337 .496
SS Frazier .357 .414
3B Frost .324 .447
RF Renfroe .439 .504
1B Rea .265 .352
CF Bradford .293 .362
DH Porter .274 .338
C Ammirati .267 .353
LF Henderson .268 .381

With an almost .500 OBP, Detz should be leading off for us. Frost gets on base too much too not have him in the lineup.

You probably don't know much about the game if you think a 2Bmen can't play LF rather easily. LF is the 2nd easiest position in baseball to play behind 1B... and there's probably some decent arguments on 1B being tougher than LF.

A 2B has to have range, quick hands, the ability to stay in front of a ground ball, and the ability to read pop-flys. A LF only needs a little range the ability to read a fly ball. It's not hard to see that any 2Bmen could play LF (but obviously, not vice versa).

Yes, left is easy to play and learn...

To play it on the level that Robson and CT play is a bit of a different story, however...but to the untrained eye, people probably don't notice much of a difference between those two and the rest of our outfielders...

I'm with you in the idea that you don't sacrifice bats for defense in the outfield...
