Auburn is good. They are talented, and even though they are young, they play hard. But Gus Malzahn is an absolute genius. He exposed our weaknesses on defense, and he put his offense in the best position to beat us. Our LB's are clearly a weakness. Off tackle runs usuallyread out and stoppedby White or Wright are not tackles this year. Plugging up the holein the middle and preventing RB's from getting to the 2nd level are now tackles 6 or 7 yards yards from the LOS.
I know Mullen called out Wilson, but lets look at this for a second. Our LB's consist of a walk on senior that now has a scholarship, a senior transfer from an ACC school, an undersized Cam Lawrence, and a bunch of freshman and sophomores who were nothing but special teams guys last year. That'spersonnel issues due to recruiting, not Wilson sucking.
Are we athletic at LB? Yes. But for the style offense we run, we need LB's with size and speed. Matt Wells is not the kind of LB we need on the field. We need bigger LB's with 4.5 or 4.6 speed. We are a run stopping team. I want other teams to throw the ball. But if we can't control the run, things like yesterday happen. And Malzahn showed us that clearly.
We aren't ready for the big time because we don't have the talent ever come together on both sides of the ball. Defense will hinder us this year, while the offense is better. Mullen better get it together on the defensive side recruiting wise. I think this game shows that guys like Richie and Beniquez Brown are guys we absolutely can't afford to miss on.
