The mind of an 18-year old

I've got an 18-year old son (senior) who has really good grades and blew the roof off his ACT and SAT. Getting letters from all over the country, including Ivy League schools, Stanford, ND, etc. so the kid probably has his pick of colleges. He's sort of an academic high 4-star, not quite a 5.

For a couple months now he's had his mind made up on his school of choice. Done deal, don't want to look anywhere else. Even bought logo gear from the school and wears it proudly. Mom and I making plans for travel, roommates, etc. All good.

So this morning we're talking and I ask him if he's still excited about his choice. Out of the clear blue sky he says "maybe, not sure", and that he's thinking about some other options...might want to take a few visits and see what else is out there. It's a big decision and he wants to get it right, for sure.

Must be even crazier for football stars who read their name all over the internet and get calls from coaches every day. It's amazing they can ever make a decision and stick to it. Can't imagine what my son would do if he had professors calling everyday to tell him how great their engineering department is, or how 90% of their med school applicants get in.

Just food for thought during Crootin season.

I getting a little worried about running out of dubmasses. Seems like we`re hearing more and more about these 32+ ACT scores etc from so many kids these days...hopefully some of yall are raising some normal kids who can keep up the long standing traditions of 17ing up, raising hell and acting fools. I mean where is the next generation of sixpackers coming from if everybody is smart in the future ?

Look, dad, he can go to Vanderbilt and be just another student. Or he can come to State and be a legend. We're building something here.

My son's wife has four degrees, one of which is a PHD. He told me she had just one B on her entire transcript. I told him that was nothing, that I had just one B on my transcript from MSU. Took him a few seconds to catch it.

32 + kids...........

are like Renardo Sidney. They think they can cruise by on talent alone. They find out that's not the case, get depressed and end up playing video games til sunrise. They quit going to class, flunk out and vanish. I feel sorry for Mr. My Son Is a Genius.

Engineering Dean at Ole Miss showing him some love?

Thankfully not even a brochure from TSUN, but if they'll throw some cash and a couple of blondes at him I'm sure he'll give them a listen.

We live out of state but he does get a handwritten letter from Mississippi State every other week or so. Jimmy Abraham's department still doing a great job.

My original post was really just my impression on how quickly a kid that age can change his mind. Funny how a fan base's emotions can ride on the whim of guys who really don't even know what they want to do this weekend, much less the next four or five years.

I don't think you're going to have to worry about dubmass Americans.

not with the way we keep passing laws. They are trying to regulate everyone to old age. If they'd just let the dumbasses be dumbasses they'd cull themselves from the pack eventually. Nowadays we have too many safety nets keeping the dumbasses alive. There's no reason to have warning signs on hair dryers not to use them in the tub. That's natural selection at it's finest and we're getting in the way.

Not sure what he wants to do but 32+ and a desire to study engineering can get you the attention of the faculty at State and a really nice stack of academic cash to go with it. Mine had the same options and could not be happier than being in Starkville.

No Kidding. He is 18 and he doesn't probably have his life mapped out at this point. 18 year olds are not ready to make the decisions we ask them to make in these situations. He needs to look at all options.

Hell I called Polkie and told him I wasn't coming AFTER I signed my letter. It pissed me off not to get a full ride and I changed my mind. Don't rush him, it is an important decision and this is when he has the option to make the right one.
