I'd put Wayne Gretzky up there. Michael Phelps, also.

Probably pretty hard to find a "team" athlete that's universally liked. Because chances are, some other teams fanbase hates them. but I'd bet Derek Jeter is up there. The Manning brothers are probably up there.

Yep. Bama fans mostly hate Bo.

Phelps is a good one. I'd add Arnie, if golfers count as athletes.

Lol... as a Braves fan I hate Jeter. So good point.

Re: Gretzky, he is absolutely loved and respected. But Bo has a better personality imo. Gretzky seems kind of dull, whereas Bo has this unique combination of humble good ole boy / bad *** athlete.

For Jeter, I'm not a big fan either. Yankee fans annoy me a lot, although I do root for them. But Jeter seems to be a great dude, played the game the right way, smashes a tremendous amount of ***. When it comes to the Yanks/Sox rivalry.. those fanbases each seem to "tip their hat" to only a few on the other side.. Jeter and Ortiz come to mind.

I counter the Gretzky/Bo take in that Bo gets a lot of his love simply for being a great two-sport athlete, and that gets him a lot of mileage. Gretzky is the GOAT hockey player, which no one can really dispute, and had zero on-ice or off-ice problems. It's very hard to be the GOAT at something and also be loved. But yes, he doesn't have much in the way of personality.

I have to believe John Daly makes this list.. but maybe for the wrong reasons lol. But Daly is absolutely in my top5 favorite "athletes".

To be at the top you have to be really good, really famous, really infamous, and probably disliked personally as well as on the court/field.

Guys like Rocker are obviously idiots, but the average person or even sports fan now may not know who they are.

I think it's Bonds. Rough personality, tons of success, broke America's most prestigious sports record, considered a cheater, etc.

I know Bonds cheated and is a complete prick, but damn it, that juiced-up son-of-a-***** is the greatest hitter I've ever seen play. There was no one even close to him. So even though I should hate him, he did things those other juicers couldn't have dreamed of.

GSP the most beloved fighter?

Jon Jones and McGregor the most hated? (McGregor also, at the same time, the most loved).

I hate Conor McGregor and love seeing him lose. I hope Poirier knocks him out again.

I don't hate Jon Jones. I hate Dana White and UFC for moving a PPV to another state because he failed a drug test and Nevada wouldn't let him fight

It's hockey, so of course not with Gretzky.

Watching him take batting practice at GABP around '03 or '04 was wild. He literally hit one ball down into one of the smokestacks and several out of the stadium completely. The dude was getting intentionally walked with the bases loaded... will probably never see anything like that again. It was f'n awesome.

I didn't like either of the Mannings but I'm probably in the minority.

Bonds and McGwire.

I would watch them bat every time it was possible because there was a good chance to see a mammoth home run.

The one McGwire hit off Randy Johnson is one of the best ever.

I wished they hadn't been juiced because it jacked up the record books and it's clear the roids worked when you compare the HR stats before and after.

The military seems to be one of the last things that cancel culture has yet to come for. Even a guy like Pat Tillman, who I'm sure some anti-anthem folks would LIKE to **** on, know better,

But give it a few years.. Pat Tillman will be some sort of villain.
This is just f'n stupid.

Ali virtually invented trash talking and a lot of people detested that. Ali was also a complete jerk to several of his fellow boxers. He called Joe Frazer an Uncle Tom and a gorilla. This after Frazier helped Ali after his title was taken away. The two only made peace a year or two before Ali's death.
Ali didn't invent it. He claimed to have been openly copying Gorgeous George.

Ali took it to a new level for athletes. Gorgeous George was a wrestler, not really a traditional athlete.
In that era professional wrestlers were considered traditional athletes. In the 1950's wrestling was a much bigger sport than the NFL. We all know it wasn't but back then that's how it was looked at.

As far as % of people who hated them, I have to imagine the leaders in the clubhouse are OJ (because he is a murderer), Kaepernick, Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos.

White people don’t like having their dominance on power threatened it when blacks get all uppity and stand up for their civil rights.
That might get you banned.....bigots are weak crybabies and will be sure to attack you for calling them out.
