Lebron drives the lane, dives forward to reach his defender with an elbow, and draws a foul.

Admittedly, I'm not a basketball guy. I watch MSU and that's about it. I try to like the NBA during playoff time, but the league is just too ridiculous to allow me to enjoy it.

I cannot imagine how a such a great sport allows for such ineptitude from it's officials. They aren't biased, they are just flat out imcompetent. How do you let LeBron forearm shiver his way into a blocking foul, but Howard gets pulled to the ground and gets nothing? It's unreal.</p>

and the Magic are obviously a whole lot better than the Cavs. They are having to beat the Cavs and the refs every time out, and they still are up 3-1. It's tough playing 5 on 8, but they are still getting it done. The NBA clearly wants Kobe-Lebron.

If you don't think the NBA officiating is tailored to certain players or teams, you haven't been watching. I'm not big into criticizing officials, but NBA officials will flat out admit that certain players get the calls. It's a league that's about its superstars. It wants to protect its superstars and market them. That's what it all boils down to. It's not really about being fair or finding the best team. It's about getting ratings and selling tickets and merchandise.

Worst officiating I have ever seen in the NBA. Against Denver, Kobe was leg whipped by Dahntay Jones and nothing was called. Then a hand check at half court gets called. Bynum goes for a steal and gets called for a flagrant. Twice in this series the NBA has had to go back and issue flagrants that were not called during the game. The Lakers/Nuggets combined for 84 freaking free throws (49 by Denver).
Basically, the officials keep letting it get out of control and then start calling everything to try to get control back. Frustrating as hell for the players I'm sure. I think they need to go back to just having fouls, technical fouls, and ejections for overly rough play and do away with the flagrants.

I'd describe NBA officiating as inconsistent. Not so much biased (although slightly), but it's very inconsistent. One minute a guy gets murdered, and nothing's called. And next play a foul is called for barely touching a guy. It's like they aren't sure what's a foul & what's not - and at this point fans have no clue either because it seems so random what the refs actually call.

The NBA just gave Jones a flagrant for the trip which is his third of the playoffs. One more and he is suspended. The NBA also downgraded Bynum's flagrant to a regular foul. Pretty dang sad that the league has to go back and reverse all these decisions with three referees on the floor.

This is turning into "Situation Disaster" for the NBA and the NBA Finals. Unless they can install some heart into the Lakers and someone shoots Howard in the head it's going to be the Nuggets and Magic. The NBA, it's fantastic...

There are flagrant ones and flagrant twos. If you amass 4 points then you are suspended. A flagrant two is apparently hitting someone in the face with brass knuckles. You also get suspended after 7 technicals in the playoffs. I sounds like alot but there are alot of players that are getting close to that number. Dwight Howard has 6 and Kobe and Carmelo I believe have 5.

I still don't watch the NBA.

7 technicals both sounds like a lot and is a lot.

ask rafer alston. that'll cost you a game.

i think the nba messed up when they started separating flagrant 1s and flagrant 2s, and now the league is going back and adding or subtracting technicals and upgrading or downgrading fouls. they're on the slippery slope to using instant replay on judgment calls that should belong to the refs. refs have also been WAY too quick to the trigger on issuing technicals this postseason.

also, the calls at the end of regulation last night were right. pietrus stepped into lebron - blocking foul. howard was pushing and grabbing as much as (if not more than) varejao. plus, there's a big difference in how much contact is allowed when you have possession of the ball (lebron) and when you are fighting for position without the ball (howard).

It's a bit different when it happens after the game and done by someone in a office, but basketball, and the NBA, have used instant replay for a very long time to sort out calls. I recall several instances where they called a flagrant foul, stopped the game, watched it on the monitor to discover it was a perception issue caused by the refs angle, and changed the call. Replay in the NBA is not a new thing.

in that situation, the refs come together to get a call right, and if none of them are sure of the call, they go to the monitor. if, however, one ref is sure in what he saw, they do not go to the monitor.

what they're doing here is completely different. stu jackson is basically reviewing every game after the fact, regardless of what the refs called on the court. if he can issue a flagrant foul on dahntay jones a day after the game, why can't he change a call from a charge to a block, or call someone for carrying the ball (because it happens all the time and the refs never call it)?

i guess what i'm saying is that jones should be fined and/or suspended, not retroactively called for a flagrant foul upon further review - that just doesn't make much sense. and if you get a T, even if you were yelling at your teammate instead of the opponent (or whatever your excuse may be), then you have to live with it, because that's a judgment call to be made on the spot by the official.

There have been several "what the hell was that call" moments already. But what I want to know is what happened to the 5 seconds closely guarded rule? Is that not a rule in the NBA? At the end of the half, Carter sat there in defensive position pretty much with his hand down the front of Kobe's shorts and the ref made no attempt to start a 5 second count. This allowed Kobe to stand there for 15 or so seconds instead of having to make a move towards the basket earlier.

And the pushing off with his legs while trying to shoot a layup call on Billups blew my mind. I guess you could call him for charging, or kicking, or something. But that call? wtf
