how many plays actually take place in 1st 10 secs of play clock?
I imagine that there are not many. The play clock begins once the previous play is over. I have not done the research but I would bet that most of the 'up tempo' teams' snaps take place in the 25-30 seconds left on the play clock range. It would be VERY difficult to get a snap off within 10 seconds of the previous play. .

Play clock starts once the previous play is dead usually. I don't think the Saban rule would have applied when the 25 second play clock is used after a penalty, timeout, or injury.
I think I saw somewhere that less than 10% of plays run by no huddle offenses would have had this rule apply.

As for the 10%, the problem is the defense doesn't know which plays are the 10%. They can't just say, oh they're going to take 15 seconds before they snap it... SUB!

But, if the offense subs, the defense gets the chance to sub. And usually, that happens on the plays where the offense takes more time. I don't like the sped up offenses but I also think they run out of steam typically if you just line up and play good defense. We played Auburn really well last year on this. If you play well, the offense will start to slow down because they cannot keep putting their defense back on the field after a 45 second drive.
