The one downside of Petersen for MSU would be ...

that if he has success, and he likely will, his name will come up for every major coaching job there is. I've thought many times in the past that Stansbury
was a brilliant hire for MSU because he wins but, for whatever reason, he's not attractive to the major programs. When Sherrill was winning, the same applied.
State was able to build a successful program around both for a number of years, without the constant drama of "will he leave" every time a job opens up.

Don't get me wrong- I'd still hire Petersen in a minute if I were MSU and had a chance to get him. It would be a great coup for you guys. But there's no obvious connection there between Petersen and MSU, other than the relationship with the AD and that only goes so far. No loyalty to the university or to the people here. So congrats if you do get him, but mark my words: if he wins you will have to constantly put up with invasions of fans from major schools reporting that they will be going all out to hire your coach. We went through that with Tubby and it wasn't a lot of fun.

I will guarandamntee you it is more fun than going 4-8 with no offense.

You add the Auburn spin about Nutt, that means he's been on someone's list or looking EVERY year for the last 5 or so. . .

No doubt, and I said he would be a good hire. But if you think you won't also be buying constant drama when big job openings come up then you would be mistaken.

So what if he leaves. I'd welcome being a stepping stone since that means our program would be moving in the right direction.

As for Stansbury. Where would he go that's better? Kentucky, Duke, NC, etc.? He's not elite program worthy. The MSU basketball gig is actually bigger than people give it credit for. He's shown he can get to the tourney regularly, which is a lot better than most every school in the nation. What he hasn't done is advance in the tourney, which is something only a select few schools do with regularity. Stans has topped out, but it's not like MSU is sitting in the valley of the mediocre in college basketball.

he's a great game-day coach but needs to show me more as a recruiter. There seems to be little enthusiasm for him among the Auburn fans so I seriously doubt he will be hired by them. Regardless, I hope we keep him but won't jump off a bridge if we don't.

If it got him to come here, then there is a good chance it could keep him here. That and the $$$ Leo left us goes a lot further than you think.

And that's a good thing. How many times did Ed Orgeron's or Sylvester Croom's name pop up pertaining to job openings in the off-season?

It's a good thing if your coach is continually brought up for job openings. It sucks if he's a Petrino that's actively going to look for greener grass, but you want your coach to do well enough to be mentioned in the off-season. Coaches that go 4-8 don't get mentioned. So if you do land Peterson (I can spell it how I want, he's the one that can't spell his own name), you better hope he does well enough to have his name pop up in coaching searches each off-season.

I've been hoping Nutt will convert - we could have Tom Cruise do the "are you ready?" introduction on the Jumbotron.

if he leaves, its b/c he did something good. And then we'll go get someone else.

That is possibly the dumbest concern I've ever heard.

it's been a while since MSU fans went through that. Actually, I don't think you ever did. Nowadays it's even worse since there's even less loyalty from either programs or coaches. It's all "what have you done for me lately?"

If he does come to MSU and then his name keeps coming up for every major job that comes along, it will mean he's been successful at MSU. And that's what I want.

As for it not being fun when Tuberville left you, you won 39 games in the 5 years right after he left you. Excuse me if I don't feel too much sympathy for your pain.

Yeah, I'd hate to lose a coach because we were winning so much.

I swear, you can set your watch by some of these idiots.

How many times did Nutt leave Arkansas? Never. He didn't leave until he was all but forced out. All the rumor-mongering is done by Sexton to gain leverage for extensions and raises.

That's just part of the game. And honestly I can't say that a significant raise is justified for a coach unless he does well enough to start garnering attention from other programs. That's why I never understood Croom's nearly 100% raise last off-season. He wasn't getting any attention for job openings, so there was no need to raise him just for the sake of raising him. Sure, he deserved a moderate raise and extension for a good season, but not nearly what he got.

...a coach left MSU for a better gig? Darrell Royal? We haven't had a coach successful enough for anyone else to want them. I think this is the definition of a coaching graveyard. If you leave, you never get another HC job.

I for one would welcome the problem of other programs hitting on our HC.

this is just like saying on Sports drive the other night when tommy was fired... an ole miss caller called in and said that Auburn was the worst college because they talked to leach and ark's coach before let TT go...

um... hello

last year I am pretty sure OM new Nutt was coming before showing O the door...

like OM isn't drama... you just give your coach a raise cause you almost lost him to auburn after one year...

We may lose Coach Pete (as the boise fans call him) to Oregon... but that will be the best year/ride i have been on in the last 6 years

3-9 3-9 3-9 8-5 4-8 um!! SUCKS

but we were too busy enjoying playing on CBS 2 weeks in a row.

What a lame reason to worry about hiring a coach.

If someone doesnt want our next coach, its b/c he isn't winning.
