I work for UKPD, and I can assure you this crap is real, as I'm posted, most days anyway, at the hospital. We use the same PPE that the medical staff use when we have to deal with a crazy, a druggie, etc, etc. I haven't seen my parents, who are in their 80's, for almost a month, for their sake. I wash my hands so much at work I have to keep a bottle of lotion on hand due to dry hands at the end of the day. I don't like it, (who does?), but I'm expected to be at work and on post, and my bills have to be paid; my kid has to be fed, etc, etc. We're all in this together folks, but I firmly believe we will come out much the stronger at the end, whenever that may be.
Today I had to go to Kroger, no choice, and it was packed. (In Richmond, Ky.) I got what I needed, thanked as many employees as I could, and got out. Btw, they were fully stocked on everything except.......drum roll please.....toilet paper and canned goods. Plenty of everything else, and I didn't see anyone hoarding anything.
My son and I love to bass fish, and I finally got him to try, and learn, to use a baitcaster. He's now learned it, as best he can since he's a southpaw and I'm not; all my reels are right handed. So, since we're going to our "super secret" pond where NOBODY but us, and the family of the owner, are allowed to fish, I had to buy him a lefty baitcaster. Wal Mart didn't have any, but our local fishing goods store was open, but via a locked door, only allow one person to enter at a time. Terrific idea, IMO. They had exactly what I wanted, plus a few new spinner baits I bought for him, and I was in and out in under 15 minutes and the next guy was then allowed in. More small businesses need to follow this example, and I'm sure a lot are, but some are not.
On a whim, I stopped by a local gun shop an old friend owns. I'd been in the mind to buy a new shotgun and a nice little Ruger 9mm,; shotgun for my son and the Ruger for dad.
Sure enough he, along with two buddies of his were just hanging out with an open front door. He states he's not worried about the virus; I don't understand that line of thinking myself but he's not going to change his way of thinking now. That, I fear is what too many are thinking: that this is either not real, or it's being blown out of proportion, and it will only cause this **** to go on longer than is necessary.

The difference between a peak in about two weeks, as opposed to a peak in 30 to 90 days, is the difference between approximately 75,000 to 100,000 deaths and probably over 250,000 deaths with mitigation. It's also a difference of seeing a return to normalcy to in early June as opposed to the end of the summer. The current situation may or may not be sustainable with a peak in mid-April but would be absolutely catastrophic to the economy if it goes on much longer than that. So this is not a "gnat" but a very serious issue and I seriously hope that the scientific experts, as opposed to message board experts, are correct about the likelihood of a mid-April peak (which actually makes sense in any event when dealing with a coronavirus as opposed to a rhinovirus). Because if this hasn't started slowing down by the end of May, absent a miracle cure, the current shutdown situation will be absolutely impossible to continue, to maintain any semblance of a functioning nation, and the other option will be the doomsday scenario projected in the initial Imperial College report.

But it also reveals your lack of understating of the IHME model. The mid-April peak is the national peak, which is simply an aggregation of all of the state level peaks. The mid-April date is primarily driven by states like New York.
There are many other states where the peak is forecasted to occur much later. Virginia, for example, is not forecasted to peak until late May. This is why the Virginia governor issued a lockdown of the state until June 10.
So even though the date range isn’t really relevant to the other poster’s point, his understanding of the peak is more accurate than yours.

The Virginia peak is May 19 in terms of deaths. That means that the actual peak of new case increase will be around the end of April in Virginia. Deaths are a lagging indicator. In any event, the projections from Drs. Fauci and Birx are what are effectively guiding the President right now, and his schedule is to have things largely phasing back to normal at the end of the month.
The peak that you referenced would occur in two weeks, like Virginia’s peak, is also the peak in the number of deaths. More importantly, both of those are also the peaks in terms of demand on hospital resources.
The model also assumes that the states who have not yet been locked down, will do so within the next 7 days. Beyond that, the model assumes that all 50 states will remained locked down until the end of May.
You might want to go back and read the fine print on the IMHE model.

From my viewpoint, what the classical, post-New Deal Republican has typically been defined as is what we consider a Libertarian these days.

Been following the healthy at home initiative pretty well.
In the past two weeks I have been to grocery store twice, liquor store twice and gas station once to get propane....also had to make an unexpected trip to the Vet Tuesday regarding our 13 y/o pup who has skin cancer.
Besides that I have a daily drive through the country just to get out of the house for a minute.
I live in a smaller town/area south of Newport....haven't been out towards that area in about 3 weeks.
We are using Kroger Clicklist for the first time this week. Food won't be ready until next Tuesday and we ordered last night....but I would rather do that than run the higher risk of picking this up and infecting another individual or family members. Cases are climbing in NKy...avoiding public as best I can which is what we should all do for now....why not?

This is false. The measures that have been taking are NOT a light switch. Meaning, either it works 100% or it does not work 100%.
It's a gradient.
-If 100% abide by the restrictions, the viral spread is slowed the best.....but it still spreads.
-If 75% abide, the viral spread is slowed a really good amount
-If 25% abide, the viral spread is slowed a mild amount
-If 1% abide, the viral spread is slowed......but by a very small amount
The entire purpose of the restrictions:
-Reduce the concentrated impact on the medical services.....thereby not getting hit at one time like a Tsunami
-Elongate the time-line thereby making each wave more manageable
-Bide time for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention (herd immunity, vaccine, etc) to catch up.
We don't HAVE TO declare martial law.....but it would save some lives.
As far as parks, gas stations, etc being open....I'm torn. Most people can go get some gas, use some hand sanitizer, avoid coming within 3-6' ft of someone and not be under much risk at all. Most people can go to the local park while executing the restrictions without issue. Unfortunately, some idiots can't. Just recently, I took my family for a hike.......and never came close to anyone. However, a friend of my wife and I got together with a bunch of her girlfriends (who obviously all live in different houses) and went on the same hike......they're idiots. Soon after, the park was shut down.
