I see trees to wiz behind.Fake News, I don't see any cows in the outfield.
I bet they were building the Hump at that point. That is the only thing around there that I think would need that much pipe at that juncture. Quality of the photograph suggest early 70's.What’s up with the modern precast pipe?
I think that pic is from around 1965/6, or there about, Hump was built in 1973,/4.Opened in 75.I bet they were building the Hump at that point. That is the only thing around there that I think would need that much pipe at that juncture. Quality of the photograph suggest early 70's.
Do you SEE the dairy barn??? I remember that happeningFake News, I don't see any cows in the outfield.
The Dude was built in 1965. State played in Columbus Redbird Park that next spring. I was in the 4th grade at a school near the Park and walked over to the park after school on game days. I was given the privilege of sitting up on the scoreboard and hanging the scores on the nails after each half inning. The players were all real nice to me and by the end of the season I had a room full of homerun balls, wood bats, wrist bands, etc. it was really cool and my life long love of State baseball was born.I think that pic is from around 1965/6, or there about, Hump was built in 1973,/4.Opened in 75.
Do you remember Furman Lake that played second base for Alabama? We called him Buckwheat and made his life a living hell every time they came to Starkville.I fell in love with Dawg Baseball during the Spring in 1977. I sat my butt in the 1st base bleachers and lived to abuse the opposing team. Occasionally, I would wander to left field to drink from a red Solo cup (drinking from the can was verboten in those days, young whipper snappers). Those were good ole days. Pardon me while I put my teeth in the glass by the nightstand.![]()
Could you imagine an SEC team playing in Columbus today? I remember in the early 80s, we used to play William Carey at Hattiesburg High School & Arkansas in Greenville. Also remember a game vs Livingston (now West Alabama) at Meridian Jr College. The Dude was built in 1965. State played in Columbus Redbird Park that next spring. He was not in the press box in this stadium either. Jim did his broadcast in this stadium from an open box at the front of the grandstand up against the screen behind home plate. Saw him there many times. Not exactly the same thing but if I’m not mistaken, Vandy used to not have a baseball press box and allegedly when we played at Vandy for many years, Jim Ellis would just be broadcasting from a little table on top of our dugout.
So true. In this photo the place looks abandoned..We, and all of college baseball, have come a long way. I went to mist every home game in the original Dude in 84-85. Most high schools in Mississippi have better stadiums now. At least in 7A-5A.
Ah yes, little Fermin Lake. He looked to be about as tall as his bat was long. He actually seemed like a nice enough guy. I suppose he got the last laugh being part of the team that won the SEC tourney at DNF in 83.Do you remember Furman Lake that played second base for Alabama? What is the white blob out beyond left-center field, but before the dairy barn?
Looks like a sign maybe? University sign? What is the white blob out beyond left-center field, but before the dairy barn?
It’s a truck.Looks like a sign maybe? University sign?
The pitching mound looks like it's a long way from the backstop but could be the angle of the pic.

Great picture! You can almost smell the fresh cut Johnson grass and cow shiit.
