I have been watching the reaction from so-called Penn State fans and I am glad to be a Mississippi State fan. I have enough pride in my school to be happy when success comes anywhere in Starkville -- not just on the football fields. I beam with pride when I hear about the successes made in the academic departments -- high scores of the incoming freshman classes -- continuing growth in both enrollment and research. I enjoy hearing about how so many of weather broadcasters come out of the MSU Broadcast Meterology department. Yes, I think all MSU fans are proud of more than just athletic success.<div>
</div><div>As for Penn State, from the reaction it seems the only thing that Penn State had going for it was football. Forget everything else that Penn State does -- it's all about the football team. According to these brilliant people, taking away their post-season for four years is going to cause the school to disappear. Without football, no one will go to class -- no one will do any more research -- no one will want to improve their lives.</div><div>
</div><div>This should act as a warning to MSU fans. I think Scott Stricklin and the coaches on staff now are on track to bring consistent success on the athletic fields. But let's make sure that we do not let this success destroy everything MSU is in ALL areas. Let's make sure that we maintain balance and success in all areas of improving our alma mater -- but not at making the sports programs the only reason to have a university -- especially if that comes at the expense of innocent children.</div><div>
