The Penn State situation should be a warning to Mississippi State

I have been watching the reaction from so-called Penn State fans and I am glad to be a Mississippi State fan. I have enough pride in my school to be happy when success comes anywhere in Starkville -- not just on the football fields. I beam with pride when I hear about the successes made in the academic departments -- high scores of the incoming freshman classes -- continuing growth in both enrollment and research. I enjoy hearing about how so many of weather broadcasters come out of the MSU Broadcast Meterology department. Yes, I think all MSU fans are proud of more than just athletic success.<div>
</div><div>As for Penn State, from the reaction it seems the only thing that Penn State had going for it was football. Forget everything else that Penn State does -- it's all about the football team. According to these brilliant people, taking away their post-season for four years is going to cause the school to disappear. Without football, no one will go to class -- no one will do any more research -- no one will want to improve their lives.</div><div>
</div><div>This should act as a warning to MSU fans. I think Scott Stricklin and the coaches on staff now are on track to bring consistent success on the athletic fields. But let's make sure that we do not let this success destroy everything MSU is in ALL areas. Let's make sure that we maintain balance and success in all areas of improving our alma mater -- but not at making the sports programs the only reason to have a university -- especially if that comes at the expense of innocent children.</div><div>

and end the day with a smile. Any hardcore football fan (which I assume most of us on here are) will naturally react like the sky is falling. This is not unique to PSU, and just about any other fan base would have lots of folks react the same way.

There is no coach in MSU history that has ever come close to the idol worship that Penn State fans had for Joe Paterno.

MSU has never had more or less of a problem with focus on athletics vs. academics than any other school in the country, and I believe that if Sandusky had molested children at MSU, he would have been fired immediately once it was made known.

I think your post might be better served on an Alabama message board given their idol worship over the Bear.

NCAA has hammered MSU in the past for relatively trivial infractions, or in some cases, really questionable "infractions."

If MSU had a Sandusky-type coach, he'd probably be dealt with before he even got out of the shower....by the staff, or others, not the NCAA.

Be more like the blue hairs. Be wary of success because it means that the NCAA or other organization will somehow bring the hammer down and constantly think that because someone is successful at MSU they are on the way out or something else will happen. By all means do not rattle another school's cages because we are lil ole MSU. Accept mediocrity as it comes cause someone is trying hard. <div>
</div><div>Looks like someone has caught the elder MSU fan syndrome. Now just tell the person in front of you to sit down cause you can't see.</div>

Sorry for the language, but give the guy a break. I think it's a decent message: MSU is a university first and a football team second.

And he was kind of a weird, creepy dude like Paterno and Sandusky were. I'm just glad in his case, it apparently really was justthat he waseccentric and a little weird and not anything really bad.

First off, you should use this> %#*^#%€ < instead of "dipst*ck"....WAY too offensive here.***....... And secondly, who the hell ever said we weren't a University first? Who needs this reminder? And finally, why is this thread on this board, and why are you defending such vaginaness?

Mullen now knows he should preemptively and proactively revoke Whit Waide's VIP all-access shower pass.

The "dipstick" usage is in reference to the Bobby Hall thread today, in which GOODDAWG used the term. Except he was serious. Sure, it was a vague attempt at humor on my part, but personally I think sarcasm/humor is best when is doesn't have to plastered with a bunch of ******.

As for my defense of his post, I interpreted it as a general reflection of what happened at Penn State, and how it might apply to us as Mississippi State fans. It doesn't apply to me, but I agree with his sentiment, and maybe (actually.... certainly) there are some folks out there that it applies to. In other words, chill the 17 out.
