So on Flo Live’s recap of the conference tournaments this weekend, Pyles has Jason Nolf on the show. Great.

However, he also decides to put his son Caleb on the show. Not great. In fact, ridiculous. To have to listen to his obnoxious know-it-all son talk like he has child prodigy like knowledge on college wrestling is a bit much. Especially when Jason is there and being talked over. Really Christian, if you want to showcase this kid, put him on maybe a Rutgers Maryland recap. Not the B10 finals.

So concludes my rant for the day.

Meh. Sons imitate their fathers. And uncles. My uncle, who was a MLB scout, once let me work the stopwatch timing guys home to first.

Ha.

I mean, it’s not a terrible premise and could be kind of endearing the right time of year.
But we as college fans get like 4 weeks of Grade A content to focus on and enjoy. Be nice to have those 4 weeks get taken seriously with the media shooting its best shot.

I actually thought he was pretty knowledgeable. I also wish Nolf would’ve been able to talk more. I had heard little Pyles is a huge Iowa fan so I expected him to fanboy but he didn’t. I was pleasantly surprised. Still probably wasn’t the time to have him on but I honestly enjoyed him more than a couple of the usual regulars on FRL

Agree the kid knows his stuff. Not sure who here has ever been on a podcast but it's not as easy as it looks. He was actually really really good

Pyles needs to get Spyker to do a guest appearance for one of his podcasts. He'll get a million views within a single day.

Definitely rather him than the Ollie guy they have on time to time.

Great thing about social media is you can let him know.

One of the local sports guys in Philly used to do that chit. He would cover Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Flyers and then his son's high school highlights. Problem was his son was not any good. If the kid had 2 catches for 9 yds he was on the news that week.

Agreed. Kid needs to be a gofor behind the scenes. He can get a few minutes on Rutgers Maryland week. He can then start his own show when he is not making fries.

"Kids" can be great for providing insight. The first time I became aware of Sam Herring was him announcing or podcasting or something when he was probably in elementary school
No doubt, and I enjoyed his pbp in the (I believe) 2019/20 Scuffle. He was clearly doing well.

To me, if Pyles the Younger had his own podcast that’s a thing and he probably would be fine. On with dad, just no interest to me. Just a weird dynamic. I skip the Chael episodes and I’ll probably skip this one too.

I just finished listening to the episode. The kid was fine. Very impressive.

Near the end, I think they said that Nolf (jokingly?) said to Christian that he (Nolf) would not come on the show unless Caleb is also on, and that’s why Caleb was allowed on.

From that, I think Nolf is a natural coach and encourager of youth. He, as a man who has been in the arena as a yoot, would probably never publicly call a well-meaning, did-his-best kid an “obnoxious know-it-all”. It is hard for me to imagine that anyone who has been a coach, teacher, parent, or man-in-the-arena would do that, especially knowing that the kid would probably see the comment.

Kid didn't bother me at all. In fact, I thought he did a pretty damn good job. Life is short. CP is doing a wonderful job with his son...but he's gotta help the boy grow out of his Iowa fandom...that's borderline child abuse!

Caleb did a great job imo. The kid is obviously smart and has knowledge of wrestling. I honestly don't understand all of the hate toward Pyles.
I have grown more fond of Pyles work in recent years, but a lot of the hate was self-induced from the early-on Pyles.

He was extremely thin-skinned on social media for a guy that is at the forefront of the wrestling media world. Extremely.

He has gotten "much more comfortable in his skin" in recent years and it shows. Makes him much more likeable. I think I can understand the growth and have some empathy with the "old" Pyles. It was probably pretty intimidating being a not really credentialed guy in a world inhabited by serious wrestling legends. Think about "hey, you got a plan." And his personna back then was likely an passive-aggressive overcompensation. I'm not sure any of us would have done any better.

He's good at what he does now.

I saw CP and Caleb on the concourse level during bigs, thought they were cute. I don’t listen to FRL much anymore, They need a new Willie/Ben, IMO. I’m sure Christian is a good dad though, you can just tell.

I'm old enough to remember Caleb being so pissed that PSU beats the hell out of Iowa that he accused PSU of steroid use. It took all I had not to pay the "footlong" fee during the broadcast so they'd be forced to read my question. My question was gonna be for Caleb asking if he thought Coach Nolf was still on steroids. Lol

Did Nolf have anything interesting to say?
Somebody asked him for his takeaway from B1Gs, and he said that Luke Lilledahl is his new favorite (collegiate?) wrestler. When asked why, he said it was because Luke is so quick. A short while later, when they started talking about Jax, Nolf retracted his earlier statement and said that actually Jax is his favorite wrestler.

People who are inherently funny, even when they’re not trying to say funny things, often do not make good comedians nor entertainers. They don’t know how to force the funny out when they want to or need to. With that kind of person, you cannot look at them and wait eagerly for the laughs. You just have to almost ignore the fact that they’re funny, and let the laughs surprise you.

I thought his son did pretty well. I would tell him what I told all my students preparing for public speaking. Talk slower. Take a breath between sentences. Talk Slower. And most importantly......Talk Slower :)
And in today’s world…do NOT use the word “like” in every sentence!! Didn’t happen so much today, but many podcasts are unbearable with the use of “like”
More responding to what public speaking students should know.

Peter King would allocate a quarter of his MMQB column to his daughter's softball results. Then there was the coffee and beer commentary. Once in a while there would be relevant football news.

Pyles was a very reasonable poster on our boards (albeit as an admitted Iowa fan) before Flo hired him. Though probably not many remember that.

He's gotten a lot better at his job in recent years. The worst part now is the solo videos where he spends 12 minutes talking about a 30 sec interview that everybody saw for themselves.

Well, that and the fart lol.

IMO there's still some residual hate for his role in Flo suing Willie. That's gonna be a high hurdle for some people, even if Willie has forgiven him.

Plus some fans need confirmation, and definitely don't want non-confirmation from a known Iowa fan even if it is fair. For some, that's part of being a fan.

Basch is okay in small doses. He says someone’s a “dawg” more than Kirk Herbstreit says “physicality”.

But anyone is better than Ollie. Ooof, Madonn’, when I had to listen to that jabroni and his “jokes”
Basch is pretty good when he's paired with Willie or Cenzo and it's just a natural conversation.

But when he's 1-on-1 with someone else and starts asking questions, Luis Tiant thinks he has a long windup.
