The score may not indicate but GW played monster D

So they cover the under and West played out of their minds on defense. West basically held Homer Flosswood to 14 points until a final heave into the end zone with :19 left.

If you watch the replay on Comcast I think you would agree that the five LBs for West had an amazing game. I'm sure I will get accused of not knowing my history but that might have been the best, the toughest and biggest victory at Duchon.

I know we beat LWE in I think '09 to go to the finals and the 3-0 mud bowl beating Thorson and WN in '12. The '12 & '15 semis were played at GS and MC last year ran an offense the West knows how to stop.

So I'm going to lay this out there for criticism or debate but I think that was the highest quality victory over the toughest opponent at Duchon in the Hetlet era.

Homer Flosswood could deal and for West defense, especially the five LBs essentially held them to two TDs until a final second disputed bomb to make it 28-21.

Let's go Oswego! Not wanting to make that drive to Edwardsville next week.

Haven't seen the stats but likely had 250+ rushing.[EDIT- Some wrote we only had 220 yards but the three scoring drives were like 55, 65, 60 so maybe we only had 220] West crashed the cratered the short side of the field over and over. Long drives with few completions. Almost like Homer Flosswood was determined to not give up the big pass plays.

Special teams also delivered a TD like most of us predicted. The QB and RBs were the most impressive we have played in years. They refused to go down on first hit and constantly extended plays requiring 2,3 and sometimes 4 LBs to finish plays. But the GW LBs caused a ton of havoc forcing three bad passes that were picked and making huge stops on multiple fourth downs.

HF is everything advertised: big, fast, powerful, fast, talented, and really fast. They are a terrific football team, well coached, and did I mention really fast. And big. They played a heck of a football game, andhave the best QB and RB combo that I've seen this season. Well done, and congrats on a great season.

I am just blown away by a couple of aspects of GW. The QB play was outstanding, the running game was the best I've seen from them this season, and the defense was incredible, especially the LBs, who I thought controlled the tempo of the game for GW. And special teams matter in the playoffs.

We live the fight another day.

how did the GW run game work against the bigger faster HF line?
GW was killing it on jet off tackle and power toss, basic GW stuff. The first drive was 5 to 10 a play well executed blocking. Old school stuff but works well.

It's all about getting numbers on the edge eh? GW did a great job maintaining blocks at all three levels.

And for our sins we get a long road trip.

Thought they might have trouble if they couldnt pass as well as last year... but still figured the game would be in the 30's. Congrats to GBW on the win.

Holy cow GBW! I watched the game yesterday on NFHS and was amazed at the level of play on both sides. In my humble opinion that was the highest level of play I've seen all year. I told myself before the game that GBW would have to play near perfectly to walk out with a win, and sure enough Coach Hetlet and company engineered just about that.

On paper GBW was outmatched in every way, but that just goes to show you why it's what can't be quantified over that matters most. The GBW defense played like a group of demons, flying around causing havoc everywhere. It took about 4 guys on each play to tackle either the HF QB, RB or WRs, and on each play you saw at least 4 GBW jerseys just bodying the opposition. Can't put into words the effort that the GBW defense turned in. Not sure if the '12 GBW defense coulda put on a better performance.

The GBW o-line also, in my opinion, had their best game of the year. They hit the edge hard, and the RB Diver just wanted it more than anybody else on the field. Combine that with the unsung heroics of Brady and his two big WRs, and you've got yourself a GBW team gunning for the 8A state championship.

Now Capn, I know you don't like looking ahead. But if GBW were to score a huge road win down south next week, and that powerhouse of a team up on the northside were to win next week too, would the resulting semi final take place at Duchon or on the northside?

If GW wins this weekend they come back to Duchon but like you said, no time to think about two weeks from now.

I have been chatting with a few folks about where you slot this. As far as wins at Duchon over highly ranked opponents in post season, the win ranks up there with MC victory last year. While MC was not ranked #2 in state or undefeated, beating Lenti is any post season game is special. Not sure Homer Flosswood has had enough post season success to fully legitimize this victory, but this is the year that talk isn't really necessary because so much gets solved in 8A on the field. At least we belong in the same sentence as the big boys.

As far as best defensive games played by GW at Duchon, most would agree that the '14 Stevie semis game was likely the best. Rewatched that last week and the GW defense was legitimately devastating until the last minute. Caused 5 turnovers and really brought it to consensus #1 until the final whistle.

Not another word about the semis ;).

As far as best GW defensive performances, how about that '12 state final win against LWE? LWE was literally unstoppable all year till they ran into that D and only put up 9. Carlson came down field and flipped that huge QB in the air to come up a yard short on 4th and 9 in the redzone.

I had been limiting the discussion to Duchon games.

If you widen the aperture, the '12 title game was a devastating defensive effort. Never seen anything like the Carlson tackle on 4th down on a high school football field no matter what the situation. In the context of effectively securing a state championship while sacrificing your body (and ultimately your baseball season) that game and specifically that play has no peer.

I recorded the CN100 broadcast and skipped to the HF touchdown in the last minute of the game. When the WR and DB come down with the ball, they block the camera angle, but I do not think the WR caught the ball. WR does not come up with it and it looks like the DB knocks it out of his hands when they both hit the ground.

What are the catch rules in high school?

I've watched some GB West clips and they look like a disciplined, hard nosed defense. They fly to the ball. There O looks very mythological and don't deviate much from what they do. About right Capn'?

Eville had a couple guys out the last few weeks but I'm not sure why. Maybe they had some different road jerseys and I just missed them. Hopefully both teams get full strength for this matchup. I know you guys have said the star tailback went down against Lyons but 22 and 11 look pretty capable.

I don't know how you stop an offense that has dragons, Cyclopes and such.

yeah we are getting great production from the RBs now. For a couple of weeks there we had to figure out what our restacked deck looked like. We figured it out against OPRF.

Not sure if mythological was an autocorrect for methodical but GW loves to run the ball and is quite happy to gain four yards a play every play. When teams sneak up, GW very happy to mix in some play action. We go to the gun sometimes but for the most part, it is four yards and a cloud of dust.

I grew up in DC area and we liked to call that Riggo Drill. Just keep getting 3.6 yards a carry and everything works out just fine.

E'ville looks like they have a stout defense so I guess we will see which one breaks first.

E'ville has a pretty good defense as well as GW. Both offenses can move the bal. I do not see a high scoring game might come down to kicker.

They must have played out of their minds to hold ESL to 20 points. Was there a weather issue for that game or was it just a great scheme that E'ville ran?

Sounds like both teams are very good and well coached. What are the weaknesses?

Watching the Oswego game Edwardsville took too many penalties. Not sure if that has been the case all year but it will hurt them if they don't clean up the miscues. Guess that would be my biggest worry based on Saturdays game.

I just watched part of the GW title game one YouTube from last year. Wow, that team was loaded. Brodner was a beast! That corner who got the pick 6 called back looked like he was in fast forward down the sideline. I hope the team making the trip down South this weekend isnt what I just watched on the Tube.

Great scheme, weather great. They rise up for big games.
Great defense but it was raining off and on that entire game. Also ESL had two scores called back for penalties. In the 4th, it poured the whole time. Very hard rain. The fans, including me, went home soaked! Nevertheless, Eville defense is very good. Should be a good defensive game, I could see Eville winning by a field goal. Their kicker could play for The Bears.

You'll see that CB on Saturday. The guys on the oline that had the best games of the group are back. Receivers might be a notch better. The QB this year has caught up to the QB from last year in the last five games. RBs are not Brodner. How about that TD before the half? Freakish how great that run was.

The defense is a little different. Four of those LBs are back and are each bigger, stronger and better than last year. DBs had more experience last year but the younger kids have really stepped up in recent weeks. D line smaller but quicker.

That title game was an open throttle game. Lville had a weaker defensive scheme than E'ville. They had an all-state D lineman (or LB) and you can see how he was dealt with. Not sure was anywhere near as good as AJ. He was all-state but he was not a 5 star kid.

I don't know if most small colleges have a dline like Eville's. The d tackle committed to SIUC yesterday along with AJ who's going to Iowa. They are big and talented but it looked like most of GWs runs against Libertyville were off tackle, jet sweep, and toss. Maybe that's their plan to stay outside the tackle on Saturday.

And yes, Brodner was a freak!
