They did and they failed. While the offense failed their assignments how many times? If the defense botched half as many of the opportunities as the offense has, WVU is blown out of every FBS game this year. The offense can screw up as many times as they have and still be within striking distance because the defense has mostly been doing their job. You cannot deny that the defense has given the offense all this room for error by still having the team within striking distance and that offense has zero chance to reciprocate for the defense if they screw up. Let's say you have 2 players in basketball where one goes 12 for 16 shooting and the other goes 1 for 10. The team loses by 3 points and when criticizing the 1 for 10 player, someone brings up that the 12 for 16 player did miss an open 3 and an easy break away layup. While those shortcomings are true, those pale in comparison to what the first player did right and what the second player did wrong. So you could argue that the first player did have a chance to win it, but you can't deny that the second player did lose it. So it is with the defense and offense in this game. The defense could've played A+ level ball and won the game while the offense could've played C level ball and won the game. I think we can agree that it's reasonable to expect one unit to perform average to win the game moreso than the other unit exceed its already above average performance. This is all on top of Riley led Oklahoma teams traditionally being more offensive minded and thus the defense generally having the tougher assignments against the Sooners.
