The worst part about that last play...

is that Bost caught the ball running back to the other goal. His momentum was going the other way from the goal where we needed to score. So with 3 seconds, either the execution was horrible or the play drawn up was to take Bost away from the goal, completely reverse his momentum and go toward the other goal, and find a man open. We should have curled off a screen going towards the goal - not away.

Really?

but I've reached the point where I literally couldn't give a **** about state basketball right now. I just don't care. Hell, I didn't even know we were scheduled to play last night until late afternoon yesterday. I neither watched nor listened (scheduled event last night). I realize my attitude is pretty bad and may not be at all representative; however, my attitude has been shaped by the demoralizing pattern stansbury has created, which is (1) recruit a collection of athletes, (2) pretend to coach them into a team but suffer from the same problems year after year after Year, including enduring pretty much annual drama queen **** with some of the players, (3) win 75-80 percent of the non-conference against 200+ RPI multi-directionals, (4) strive for .500 in the conference, (5) sit on the f'n bubble, (6) either NIT or dance early exit. So, here I am now in full who gives a **** mode.

they did exactly what you are supposed to do and forced us to go get the ball going away from the goal.

There is not a ton you can do with 3 seconds left. I would have tried to throw the ball to around half court and just hope you come out of there with it and can get a look.

And i wasn't all that disappointed with what we did with 16 seconds left. At least it wasn't a high ball screen for barry to let him go do something. We went to our horse. They doubled and he didn't see it coming.

Basically half our season is full of exhibition games (some of which we lose). We have a 9 game winning streak and there's not one team to get excited about? I understand needing winnable games, but this is getting old. I like having winning basketball teams, but it just doesn't do as much when you don't give a **** about watching any of the games until conference play. </p>

some of you need to back away and take a chill pill. Remember who we are. I'm not saying woe is MSU but **** take a dose of reality.

but I'm still keeping up with what's going on. Part of the enjoyment that I get out of State sports is reading about and discussing them, but I just can't read this board much during basketball season. So that kind of contributes to my non-give-a-****-ness.

it's not like we did something that is difficult to guard. i know, there's only so much you can do. but the play we ran looked like it was designed like this:

(1) phil and dee, set up on opposite sides of the backcourt.
(2) phil, screen for dee.
(3) barry, throw the ball in to dee.

the two wku players (#4 and someone else) saw the screen coming and actually called the switch to each other before the play even started. that's why dee was cut off from going toward the goal - because of the defenders' easy switch. seriously - i think my church basketball team would've defended that play with the same success.

i agree with you on the play with 16 seconds left. none of our guys can take the defender off the dribble (save dee, perhaps). varnado, though not the best offensive post player ever, has some moves and can score in the paint. down 1, you get him the ball if you can and hope he can convert or get fouled. when they doubled, he rushed the shot instead of passing. he wasn't in good position when he caught the ball, but they defended him well. i like that we gave the ball to varnado in that situation.

but I would like to play a fewer schools with bigger names. Doesn't the focus on RPI let us do that without killing our tournament chances? (that's an honest question if anybody wants to explain it to me).

Also, between scheduling no name teams that are better than people realize (WKU and Richmond), I'd rather schedule name teams that people don't realize suck (UCLA and Depaul). Is that not realistic? How far ahead do we schedule basketball games? Is it a short enough time in advance that we could reasonably identify teams that were going to be sure losses? If so, what's stopping us from scheduling some lower tier schools from name conferences? Is it that everybody wants to play them? That we want mostly home buy games? That the patsies really improve our chances of making the tournament?

that we were down by 11 with like 3 minutes to go, and made it a 1-point game. And, with 16 seconds on the clock and a 1-point game, I want the ball in Varnado's hands inside- that was the right call. We could have run our usual last-second play- let Randy try to drive the lane...
