Theory on why our team is struggling.

Haven't seen this discussed yet on here.

We might very well just be in a shooting slump, or it might be that Stansbury is the buffoon that some of you think he is, but I think it is more along the lines that we have ZERO depth on our team this year.

Jarvis player 34 minutes last night, and has been averaging 35 since conference play started. He is not able to play at a high enough level playing that many minutes a game. And when he does have to come out, Lewis and Reik are so bad we are having to play Kodi at the 5.

Bost is averaging 36 minutes a game in conference. He needs more time to rest, but our offense is so stagnant with Randy at point he is having to play.

I guess I thought this team was going to be great because in addition to 5 returning starters + Sidney, I thought we would have good bench production, which just hasn't been the case.

We play at least 9 players every night. Some teams play 7-8 players. How is that not depth?

My opinion would be that we choose to play our starters too much and run them into the ground. We have ways to play people on our team 10 minutes a game so Jarvis never goes over 30. Kodi is doing well at the 5 and is only averaging 23 minutes lately. Osby needs to play more. Turner can spell Barry and Ravern. Barry could run the point if we had any kind of offense at all....

The depth crap is ********. You think Bama has more depth? Rider? Westerm Kentucky? UPig?

It's that we have no true backup for the 1 and the 5. Sure you can take other 2, 3, and 4 people out of their positions to spell the 1 and the 5. But that probably leads to productivity going down. I know that Bost hasn't been playing that well, but when you move Barry to the 1, it probably cuts down on his productivity as well.

Barry seems to do okay at times at the 1 and Kodi is playing a little better when he moves to the 5. Maybe this will start to pay off with wins.

or a lot of foul trouble. 32 minutes for each of your 5 starters and 20 for each of your 2 reserves. If anything, we play too many players, but still manage to play some of our starters too many minutes (that wasn't the case last night except for 37 minutes for Randy Stewart though).

That plus what c34 says are the problems this year. We basically have 6 scholarships sitting on their *** for whatever the reason. Stans needs to change his rotation to get more production on both ends of the floor. I think it could be done with what we have; naturally, it would be easier with more quality depth.

Stans reminds me of Polk's late days in a lot of ways, no flexibility, just as if Polk saw you as a second baseman, that was all you were going to play no matter what, Stans sees Turner as only going in for Augustus and gets set in a certain way and refuses to change. Also our offense is an absolute joke, no off the ball screens, no back cuts, reminds me of a pick up game where just waiting on somebody to drive or get tired of standing around and throw up a shot. In my opinion if they are going to be bombing this many threes a game Benock should get some more looks. Also, the depth is a problem with the starters playing so many minutes but Stans could fix that with a little creativity, he just has got set in his ways.

Kodi and Phil played together a lot last night. Kodi played all the backup minutes a the 5 which is an obvious change.

The coaches have tried to get him to shoot more, but he continues to pass up shot opportunities.

See my first point regarding Kodi playing the 5. This is about as creative as you can get considering Kodi is actually somewhere between a 3 and a 4.

What kind of "creativity" is he going to do about our lack ofpoint guard depth?? Let'sbrainstorm...

Creative thingsStans could do to solve our back-up point guard issues:
1) HGH for Twanny so he heals faster
2) Propose the whole thing is changed to Wheelchair basketball so Twanny doesn't need health hips.
3) Appeal for Jamont to be able to use his forth year of eligibility
4) Dress Zimmerman in Phil's uniform andhope no one notices the subtle differences
5) Play with four players and pretend the other team doesn't realize.

He'stried to playRandy as the point, but I think all parties would agree thatRandy is no PG...regardless, now you have Randy playing too many minutes. You don't have Shaun Smith so you have to rely on Riley for substantial minutes....and Rileyhas apparantly decidedto sit out most offensive posessions.
I'm not saying Stans is setting theworld on fire, but some of the reasoning around herebeyond illogical.

Fact: We don't have a back-up point guard to turn to when Dee is struggling
Fact: We don't have a consistent inside scoring threat to turn to when our shots aren't falling
Fact: Weonly have oneplayer that candrive the ball to the rim with any threat of scoring or dribble the ballmore than 3 times withoutturning it over.

It's not so much that we don't have enough bodies that play, its that we would be MUCH better in my opinion if we had Twanny instead of Benock and Bailey instead of Lewis.

ETA: I know that sounds obvious, but its not so much about who the 2 injured players were swapped with but more of the positions that they play. We have a team full of 2s and 3s, so we could afford to lose someone at those positions. 1 and 5, not so much.
