Especially after the Russians played a song called F*** You after the American figure skaters completed their routine (to the James Bond theme).

I'm too young to appreciate the true American-Russian rivalry, but I'm enjoying it. I'm especially enjoying seeing them represent their USSR history by having a bunch of people dancing like they're at a Beatles concert.

Wow. It never occurred to me that people that young exist.

Well, the Ruskies were setting up nukes at Cuba and our nudging them away from there almost started World War III.

The nuclear arms race was quite a thing to live through. Without getting political or anything (stop it...I'll lock this thread), it really was a little scary to live in that era knowing that nuclear world war could kick off in an instance and destroy civilization.

Outside of an actual war, there was just beating each other in sports. In the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, the Soviets were a superpower in ice hockey while the US had a team of college kids or some such. We didn't have a snowball's chance, but we beat them in the semis and then went to win gold.

And then Rockey beat the **** out of Ivan Drago.

You don`t have to look any farther back than the woman they chose to light the Olympic flame the other day to "appreciate" the hatred they have for us. Patton was spot on.

Anyone remember the drills in school where we "Ducked and Covered"? Like that was going to stop a thermonuclear blast from evaporating us. Yes the 70's and 80's were truly a fearful time to live through. You just tried not to think about it but somehow knew it was inevitable that we would go to war with them. And the Olympics were no fun during the Soviet time because they owned us in everything. They had the government training their athletes who were all taken from military ranks while we tried to compete using volunteers with no funding for training. Most of our athletes had to have full time jobs PLUS raise money to train while their athletes training was their job. It is sweet to see how far they have fallen.


To add to that. During the Soviet Era the Russians always had the best facilities in the world too to train at. Anyone notice where all these Olympic athletes from around the world train now? Michigan, Colorado and New Jersey. Suck it Breshnev!!!

i think its interesting that they had to really tip toe around all of their realities. interesting way to attempt to spin it all.

If it never occurred to you that some people are too young to remember the Cold War, then it's going to be a total mind 17 when you realize that children born on 9/11/01 are over 12 years old.
