to be, generally, less freaking out about Friday than I expected from here. I guess our fans are finally figuring it out.

However, for those that are still freaking out let me add the following; WCU was a top 15 team in the NCAA in hitting (.308) and total runs scored last year. Our ERA was 2 and we held them to .240 BAvg this weekend. I'd say we did alright.

i think with cohen, we have all learned to bite our tongues a bit. yeah it was frustrating as hell and a major buzzkill, but it was game one and things will get corrected. we just played a 3 game series for the national title with a group of overachievers that got hot at the right time. cohen has a way to making those that criticize him look very, very stupid. i for one have learned to keep my trap shut. still, a very anticlimactic way to start the season, but you take the bad with the good because the good has so much upside.

I think even the rabid dog pack recognized we were playing a solid team with a pretty damned good pitcher on Friday. Some of us older folks probably recognized WCU as a traditionally good baseball program from the days when it seemed we always had a game with them in regional play.

As a short, pudgy, slightly eccentric, legenday former HC once said....

That's baseball. And he is right. Just about every team will lose a few in pre-conference. Thanks to mother nature we started off with a much tougher challenge than we planned and I consider taking 2 of 3 to be a successful weekend. It just kind of sucked to lose the opener.

The real proof of the pudding will be the SEC slate. Despite the unquestionably rousing success of last season we still have a couple of dragons to slay. One being to compete for the SEC regular season title the second to score a top 8 national seed.

We went 30-20 against top 50 opponents last year including:
3-3 against Central Arkansas
1-2 against LSU
1-2 against Kentucky
1-0 against Austin Peay
1-2 against Arkansas
2-0 against South Alabama
2-1 against Florida
2-2 against Ole Miss
4-0 against aTm
2-1 against Auburn
0-4 against Vandy
3-0 against Bama
3-1 against South Carolina
2-0 against Virginia
2-0 against Oregon St
1-0 against Indiana
0-2 against UCLA

So, against the quality of team we played to kick the year off, we actually only swept a weekend series twice last year -- aTm and Bama...

We're fine. Would be ideal to be around 18-2 or 17-3 heading into SEC play though.

Our hitting won't be the best it's ever been, but our pitching is lights out. With our schedule being weaker this year, we should AT LEAST be above .500 in conference games.

Short of Woodruff, did anyone have a bad weekend? Even with his bad start, we were 90 feet from getting that game into extras, and we were getting to their pen.

Lord I would hope so. We were 16-14 in the SEC the last two seasons which is just one loss from finishing .500. We did have a BRUTAL SEC schedule last year. Coming out of nowhere to compete for a NC was an absolute 3-4 week rush last season but I would love the sustained satisfaction of being a Boss in the SEC as well.

Well, our hitting was atrocious. We batted .207

as a team. Over the weekend we only had 18 hits AND struck out 33 times. That's terrible. We offset those atrocious stats with 23 walks and 4 HBPs. SEC teams are gonna make us earn it more. I'm not saying we did not earn SOME of those walks and HBPs but they gave us some too.

That had to be somewhat expected. The normal "pitching is ahead of hitting" theorem applies here, though I don't know how valid it has proven to be. Plus, as I said before, you don't take your two best bats out of the lineup and not miss a beat. Frazier and Renfroe will be sorely missed.

I agree. I'm just a little shocked that there has been no complaints about the

hitting. Western Carolina batted .240 as a team and folks were pumping their chest out about it...well. The difference in the series was that our staff issued 16 free passes, theirs issued 27. And, clutch hitting. Strikeouts were equal.

Yes. The "rabid dawg pack" was impressed by that Randy Johnson clone that threw 8 innings Friday. I wished bad things upon him and his family by the 5th inning.

That bastard was ridiculous. I don't have any idea how hard he was throwing, but he was hitting corners and putting the ball wherever the heck he wanted all night. He made it very difficult to lay off of dang near anything, and he made a few of our batters like Vickerson look downright silly at times. I hope we don't ever run into him again.

He's not a power pitcher

He sat 88-91 with his FB. He's a control/command guy with a plus slider. He should be in the bigs in the near future. Same with their shortstop, Attaway. He's a legit 5 tool guy playing one of the three premier positions

I would wager the new bats/balls will take some getting used to as well. There's at least a little bit of a learning curve there I'd think.

As for the rest, if we host a regional of any kind this year I'd say it was a successful season. Not gonna get worked up over an early loss.

Never good to lose a game, but strangely, losing the first one out of the gate leaves a bad taste right"off the bat" and they don't want to go back there, so it could be a good thing.

My general impressions from last weekend:

A) I'm worried about Woodruff.
B) Their Friday night guy would start on most staffs in the SEC and would be the Friday starter on several.
C) would have liked to see us play more small ball with him, see how he gets off the mound. Thought we missed some chances to disrupt him.
D) I'm worried about Woodruff.

lindgren.
He started last season looking like an all-American, as a starter. Throws hard, good stuff, lefty. How can he not get it done. I don't understand it.

On the other hand, Dakota Hudson is stepping up.

Amazing we lose one game to a very quality opponent and a first class pitcher and it brings the "I like to ***** crew" out. If we go 16-4 in OOC play we should fire Cohen, right BC's.
