People taking us over Memphis in a blow out...

Ignoring the chance of being called a homo by tauting our practice and workout photos...

Wondering which game on the schedule will be our first shutout...

Talking about our D-Line like we're the '85 Bears...

Here's what I think. We're going into the season with a QB who's had one good game in two years and he's slightly ahead of a guy who's never taken a snap in college. We're replacing our offense (aka Anthony Dixon). We're completely unproven at CB. I still don't think we'll be able to kick it past the 10. We've got serious question marks at LB. Our receiving corps has a couple of playmakers and a couple of possibilites.

Take a look around at practice photos from places like LSU, Auburn and Georgia... you know, teams we're marking down as season turning points. Their players are all big, fast and ripped to shreds too.

I'm not saying we're not vastly improved over the Croom era. We are. But we need two more years and two more recruiting classes like the last one to be a shoe-in for a bowl.

made here. Its easy to get wrapped up in how good the guys look when we've all been College football deprived for months now. Also easy to forget that other teams are out there improving and learning everyday. Facts are facts: We are an unproven team with a lot to improve on, but a lot of potential. But damn, its hard to not get excited after a crushing blow to %%%$ in last years Egg Bowl and the potential playmakers that we have.

Relf 7-for-11, Russell 6-for-11, Dylan Favre was 8-for-12.

I'm not great in math but it appears Favre had a higher completion % and they gave him more reps than R&R. Definitely a situation to keep any eye on.

Never in its football history has Miss. State been a shoe-in for a bowl.

13 bowl appearances in the history of the school, & you talking shoe-in for a bowl in two years?

Seems to me you need to shear yourown wool instead of preaching to everybody else theirs is too thick.

Also, I think Favre is a lot more of a leader than Henig ever was.

playing his true freshman *** this season. I am just relaying what the buzz is....He could totally be a Henig. But Henig's problem was that he was fragile and a turnover machine- the jury is still out on Farvuh

Turnovers are my concern right now with Russell. Who's to say he isnt a Jarrett Lee? Great talent but throws the picks too often...as I said- we just have to see once he hits the field what the results are

we haven't been competitive since they went to where it took 6 wins to get to a bowl game.

Compare that list of bowls to the number of seasons we've had 6 wins and that will tell the tale a little better.

I get what everybody is saying about Favre and the comparison to Henig, but Favre, according to Mullen, has the "it" factor that he looks for in a qb. I just think that we will be better at this position then we have in a long time. I think the offense will be improved, and our defense (front 7) will be strong. The question marks for me is defensive back field, an a 2 man qb system this year.

Notice that everything referred to in this post has "I and Me" in it, just my opinions, that's all.

.. this is typical Miss. State fanbase ignorance:

The 2007 Liberty Bowl win was illegitimate, because it took place during the Croom era. I don't care if Ol Blue & dawgstudent coaches MSU to a bowl win, it still going to be huge in my book.

With that type of thinking prevalent among the Miss. State fanbase, it's a miracle MSU has any bowl appearances in its history, much less a paltry 13.

for what he accomplished in HS. Yeah, I know it was 4A and not 5A or whatever but it sure as heck wasn't 1A. I don't remember specifically what Henig's numbers were in HS but I seem to remember them being somewhat average at best. I certainly know Henig didn't come close to any State, National or probably even local HS yardage or passing records. So given that, until I see something to change my mind, in no way am I going to think about Favre and Henig as being in any way similar other than neither are very tall. And somehow I don't see Favre in a fur coat.

I get a lot of the other stuff you are saying, and they are valid concerns, but question marks at LB? 2 of our 3 LB's are very, very solid players. Just because we are unsettled at one spot doesnt make the whole group suspect. I don't think they are world beaters but I certainly don't think the group as a whole is a concern.

You want to see question marks at LB, check out what we return next year. We better hope some of these freshmen plus CJ Johnson are ready to go.

...since MSU began playing football in 1895, the only decade since then you could run bowl shoe-in smack was the 1990's.

The statistics & historical trends do not back you up when claiming "we'll be a shoe-in for a bowl in two years." I don't think ramping it down to 6 wins helps your case much.

Our MLB has never played the position and one of our OLB's was a QB/S in high school who's also never played the position.

They've got the potential to hold their own, but I wouldn't say that's a foregone conclusion.

As an outsider, I'm withholding judgment on Mullen's ability to coach QB's. Last year, Tyson Lee was Sneadesque. He had a much better year in '08. We can talk Tebow and Smith all we want, but Mullen is now the head man and he needs to get these guys better. (Relf was better than Snead,$%$! sucks, etc., is understood).</p>

Based on the practice reports I've been reading, I am disappointed with Relf. I wanted him to step up and clearly take the job. As of now, he has not, and that worries me a lot. I hope he picks it up for our sake. If not, we are once aGAIN going to be forced to play a freshman QB that is not ready.

I think the WR's will be fine not that we have someone that can actually get the ball to them.

"it". Tyson had a lot of want-to but didn`t have "it". We`ll see on Dylan. Stewart Patridge was a great example of having "it".

Last year, Tyson Lee was Sneadesque.

That would imply Tyson actually had a good 2008 and regressed in 2009. Tyson sucked in both seasons...and changed offenses.

I think Relf's year over year change this season would be a much better indicator.

Short, great high school numbers, both have a gun.

passes in practice. I remember Henig numbers being around 5 for 12 with 2 picks in practice. Hening had a strong arm but wasn't that accurate.

Relf is not turning it over during the 7 on 7's...Russell is the one doing that- so far....Henig an Relf are as polar opposite as two players can be

and watched Relf and Favre. Favre will not play period. The passes he completed were after the d line had already touched him and the coaches allowed the play to continue to get they guys in game shape. He did throw one long ball well but as for to the sidelines he was short on most of them and the recievers were having to make plays on the ball. Relf looked much more comfortable when the fire was on than did Favre and he threw the ball well he just had a couple of guys drop some passes.

this has been 7 on 7 they are doing- not Relf's strongest part of his game. We will average at most 25 passes a game and probably around 13.5 completions. Quick screens and other short passes will make up a large majority of those 25 a game, along with some play-action (which is not effective in 7 on 7)

I say aGAIN- If Relf is even remotely close to Russell in the passing game he will play the large majority of snaps because our offense is going to be 63-65% run. The fact that Relf is throwing it just as well as Russell means he will without a doubt be the QB with Russell playing a little here and there. Relf is the better running QB by an extremely large margin, and we don't run the I where the QB is in there to pass and hand-off.

Relf was clearly #1 coming out of Spring and will be clearly #1 once the pads go on and the hitting starts

class. Yes, There is no South Panola in 4A, but there were a lot more really good teams, and a lot more teams period. Without USP, 5A would not have been very good for the last 10 years.</p>

</div><div><p style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; ">Fall camp has also given Koenning and company a deeper look at Favre, the record-setting and Parade All-American quarterback from St. Stanislaus. Thus far, Koenning has noticed one encouraging sign.</p><p style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; ">"Wherever he throws to, he hits it," said Koenning of the rookie quarterback. "I mean, he doesn't miss very often. He has a tremendous knack for completing passes and as a quarterback, that's a great trait. You don't want quarterbacks that don't complete passes (laughing).</p><p style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; ">"But seriously, he's got that knack. When we tell him to put it on the outside number, well, he puts it right on the outside number. Those are things that have been impressive to me. His height has not even been an issue. He hasn't had a ball batted yet."</p></div>
