the local high school which bears the name Robert E Lee.....lots of whining by the black community and there white wannabe supporters......but here is a quote that I found interesting and relevant......." Yes, Lee fought along side those who would preserve slavery. But are we going to judge our heroes from the past by the standards of today? If so close up Monticello and Montpelier, take down the statues of Ben Franklin,John Hancock and Patrick Henry, and rename the nation's capital. After all Jefferson,Madison,Franklin,Hancock,Henry and Washington were all slaveholders"........and if we are going to be REALLY politically correct let's rename all those schools named after Martin Luther King.....his ideals were as upsetting to some folks as the ideals of Robert E Lee are to others......

Your argument was fine until you threw in MLK -- he didn't lead an army that was trying to destroy the Union. That said, I'm right there with you on all this renaming of high schools, removal of statues, and banning the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (which wasn't rectangular, it was square, but that's not important). Everyone knows what it stood for and what the men who fought under it -- including my own great-great grandfather and at least 3 of his brothers -- were trying to do, but attempting to erase all visible evidence of the rebellion isn't going to change the facts after 150 years. People need to focus on what's important. A friend of mine suggested that the whole ANV flag issue could be put to rest if the United Daughters of the Confederacy trademarked it, then sued every hate group that tried to use it as a symbol.

It is impossible for all sectors of society to agree on anything. Yes, there will be a small fraction of the public having anything named for anything related to the confederacy even though the memorial or whatever is done in good taste and is mostly done in acknowledging history. Isn't any difference than some loonies that protest naming things after black leaders for their work in civil rights.

As long as the memorial or whatever isn't glorifying the reason there was a civil war which was to promote slavery by protecting it, individuals need to have a thicker skin and don't worry about a High School named after Lee. They need to focus on real issues and real discrimination in today's society.

Quick Thread-jack along these lines. Lately my Sister-in-Law has been using Ancestry.com to trace her family lineage. In researching her family she discovered one side of her family with some dark pasts (moonshine, murder, etc.) on another side however she discovered she had a multi-great grandfather who before the Civil War had inherited some 20 slave families from some Uncle. On the first Christmas after inheriting these families he freed all of them, gave them each some livestock and set them up on property.

So how many of ya on here do rock a confederate flag on your vehicles or display one at home? Seems like the intelligent people in the Country don't really advertise their confederate love? how come?

With the heroin problem becoming rampant, maybe High school will have new meaning. How about Syringe High School.

Oh there are plenty of trucks in my area recently sporting the flag in the bed too, my question though was whether you display it on your own vehicle or in front of your home. I don't cause I don't want to be identified that way, just saying,

Wonder how long it would have taken to abolish slavery if they had? Or if we would be allowed fly the stars and stripes up North.

Just a suggestion in an attempt to satisfy all liberal Dems. Let us name all schools Martin Luther King. Follow that with a number to distinguish different schools. As a Southern Conservative, I would have no problem with that if it would put a stop to these meaningless pissing contests.
