Just pony up for a private jet card and fly direct from DFW to STF. Problem solved. If you're flying 6-8 people at a time it isnt as unreasonable as you might think.

If Taylor Machine Works were to expand Starkville should do everything to get them.
Close enough where it is, IMO. People can live in Starkville and drive an easy 30 minutes.

Doesn't Target generally locate in larger cities? MSU/large universities might change that criterion in a small college town.

It sure beats the underutilized, mismanaged POS we have down here in Jackson....

Isn't the Jackson airport passenger traffic about average for a town that size? Mobile, quite a bit larger, has half the passenger traffic (bled away by Pensacola for the most part). Smaller airports everywhere have trouble attracting airlines, and then keeping them once they're there.

The excitement that the Eli Manning brought to Ole Miss got Oxford rolling. Same thing happened to Starkville with the Dak/Mullen run.

Or going back even farther, his father Archie. I think that's when OM's football sidewalk fans picked up, especially in the rural areas, and hasn't really dropped off.

Correct. At the same time, Auburn (pretty mediocre in football for the most part, at least to Alabama standards) has remainded pretty much the same size over the years. Auburn may be a little tougher academically, however.

One reason for pilot shortage is that they're not paid very well anymore. The median pilot salary is about $130K, while cargo pilots can make 3 times that amont.

Dallas to B'ham is cheaper than Dallas to Memphis? That doesn't sound right ... Memphis is a much busier airport than Birmingham (although the closing of the Northwest hub hurt them immensely).

What? Mobile is not nearly the size of Jackson.

Yes it is. The city of Mobile has >190,000 and the metro (only 1 county) has about 415,000. Add in Baldwin and it's well over 600K.

The city of Jackson has about 159,000 and a metro of 5 counties, which drives its population to something over 500,000.

The Mobile metro encompasses just over 1200 square miles, while the Jackson metro is near 4,000 square miles. It's all how things are defined.

Jackson's airport traffic was considerably higher 20 years ago than it is today. Business travel in Jackson went downhill after the telemarket business went elsewhere. Frontier has helped get some traffic back, but they will have to grow the market by themselves to make a real difference, because no else will.

Mobile airport traffic is worse than Jackson and always has been. In fact, they are trying to move operations from MOB to BFM - Mobile downtown airport to make it more viable and convenient. Lots of industry there.

Pensacola Regional kicks ***.

In over 12 years. It just shows he's interested about the University, not necessarily the state in general.
It does not work that way. Mississippi State University goes hand in hand with Mississippi. It's a shame you don't understand that.

Yeah, so, you are wrong. Jackson MSA is like 150K bigger than Mobile. Case closed. They define MSA for a reason.

Even if you add all of the Daphne/Fairhope MSA, they are roughly the same. But you can't do that.

Something else cities can market about themselves these days is their internet speeds. I’d love to see the University come to an agreement with an ISP to go supernova with download speeds as part of some sort of partnership, research plan, bag of goodies, whatever.

Right now the average download speed in Starkville is 25.76 Mbps. This is 0.4% slower than the average in Mississippi and 65.8% slower than the national average.

I know it’s probably not high on anyone’s radar to provide better service to Mississippi, but since we rank 46th in “most connected states”, there’s definitely room for improvement if someone puts it on their “let’s do it” list.

Seriously? If you told me to name 20 things, none of those 3 would be on it. That sounds like "name 3 attractions in a summer resort town for $500 please Alex"

Indeed. Rocket, it is quite evident he is at that age when you have all the answers, and I have been around here just about the same time the board was created, we just lost my history when we changed hosting sites.

CatDuck, if Mississippi had grown and improved as much as MSU has since I left there in 2007, it would not still be a bottom feeder.

I have deep feelings for the state from living there for 40 years. But some things never change there. It's a shame because it could be so much more than it is but for some reason, those in charge can't get out of their own way. A large part of that is because those who have the power don't choose the best and brightest, but often let a family name or outright nepotism guide their decision making.

Is there no gentrification going on with all those older homes in that area? Seems like that would improve the quaintness of the town. It just needs some rich retirees and young people to go in and renovate those houses that I’m sure the students are renting out.

This has helped Chattanooga

They keep touting themselves as technology town with their high-speed internet, but that comes at a price.
I love Starkville, but unfortunately it has been developed like every other small town with rows and rows of cheap shopping centers that are practically impossible to make vibrant.
