would have been as prevalent as it is today - that would have received the media attention that Dak Prescott is receiving now.

Smoot has gotten his fair share of media attention. A lot of it was for "runnin' through the okra patch" on that boat ride. But to your point, I don't think anyone (while at State) has gotten this amount of coverage.

I think the 97 team could have been a story because after the Alabama game -we controlled our destiny in the West and you had the unfortunate death of Keffer McGee.

Jackie Parker was the SEC MVP in consecutive years in the early 1950s, and I think he got some Heisman votes as well.

Other than that, I really can't think of one.

I think the obvious answer is Bond, if for no other reason than I think he would have been a quote MACHINE for the press. But that would have been a totally different type of coverage than Dak is getting.

I can't speak for overall media coverage, but as of this morning, Dak is very much in the Heisman picture and that's really about all that needs to be said. I've read about a half dozen Heisman related articles during the last week, and not only has Dak been included in every one, but he's been in the "Stock is Rising" group every time. Unbelievable for an MSU player

Don Smith got just as much media attention relative to 1986. We beat Syracuse on the road and we beat Top 10 Tennessee in Knoxville. Everybody was talking about Don Smith. After we beat Florida he was in the Heisman conversation. USA today ran a weekly deal showing the stats for the top 4 or 5 Heisman contenders and he was listed in that every week. We were 6-1 and ranked 13th. But in that 6th win he got hurt against Tulane and we were whipped handily by Auburn, Alabama and LSU by a combined 120-13 (or something similar). By the time we got to the Egg Bowl, Smith was a shell of the qb he was in the first half of the season and we lost 24-3. Finished 6-5 and didn't go to a bowl. It was Felker's first year.

John Bond and Johnny Cooks were pretty much household names after the 1980 season around Jackson - I was 12 in 1980 and I knew John Bond, John Forcade, and Lester MOFO MADDOX.

And John Bond would not have survived in a social media age. His off field exploits would have been major fodder for social media.

College Football's Best Kept Secret

Remember that poster? I recall the poster was a full body, close up photo of Smith in the pocket at Neyland with the caption in my title. I would kill* to have that poster now. It was awesome.

Smith's popularity and the poster is probably the most comparable situation that i recall to Dak. THe poster was the university's heisman campaign (if you can call it that). We have never done that for any other player.

I remember that Auburn game very well. They ran, and ran, and ran right over us. Ala and Lsu just followed the script that Auburn exposed. It was a disappointing finish to the otherwise promising season.
