Fulmer played a role in turning in Bama for messing up with the Albert Means deal. Regardless of who the rat is, you can't and won't get in trouble unless you're actually doing something wrong in the first place. Bama fans still like to blame Fulmer for their probation in the same way, when in reality they wouldn't have gotten in trouble in the first place if they weren't purchasing defensive tackles. Also, I never really thought your downslide under Sherrill had anything to do with an NCAA cloud hurting recruiting. Your 2001 team was as talented as many of his previous teams. I believe you were even pre-season Top 20 that year, with the infamous Rose Bowl Robertson prediction and everything. The problem is that Sherrill simply lost his team. You could see it in the way they played. They weren't a team. It was a bunch of individuals. Either he recruited a bunch of guys with attitude issues, or he just didn't do a good job of molding his talent into a team. The talent wasn't the problem. It was his control of the team that was the problem. I don't think an NCAA investigation would've been the cause of him losing control of his team.

We may have produced receipts for most of the weeks, but Wright and Kelly stayed there for free the whole semester. I had that on good authority from the beginning of the investigation, but was told that we had it taken care of. Obviously, we only had it 90% taken care of. So the NCAA chose to take away scholarships for no reason? I didn't follow your case other than to know that Sherrill resigned and you were put on probation. I've never seen the NCAA put someone on probation for nothing. If you believe that's what they did to MSU, then you must also believe that Khayat has a PLOI locked in his desk to this day.

The point is, that we were doing the same type things every school was, yet we get raked over the coals for it. In Sherril's case, he was good enough of a coach at what were appeared to be "second fiddle schools" by boosters, fans, etc of the "other school" that they could not take it.

no doubt about that, but the primary reason our program fell into the crapper as fast as it did was that JWS became totally distracted with things like the NCAA mess and personal issues like several members of his family dying and his wife fighting breast cancer. The 2001 team definitely should have had a much better record howeer. But there is no doubt that all the early 2000s recruiting classes were affected by the investigation. We recruited some fairly decent players at the top of those classes but those classes were VERY shallow on talent and with a lot of guys with low character.
