We're at March 18 now. The deadline for players to withdraw from the draft (if they declare) is April 10. So that's basically three weeks. The new coach needs to be in place at least a few days before that deadline to give him a chance to talk to Moultrie about his plans. I guess it goes without saying that Moultrie will be the new coach's biggest recruit if Moultrie decides to say for his senior year.

I don't know whether to expect a head coach from a BCS school, a head coach from a mid major, an assistant from a BCS school, a former assistant of MSU, who knows. And it's tough, because you want him to make the right hire but we also want it to be as soon as possible.

but I know Stricklin senses the urgency and I would almost bet that unless our next coach is still coaching after tonight in the tourney either as a HC or asst, then we will be talking about him by next weekend. Again, just a hunch. I think some domino's will begin to fall in the next day or so with some guys that got eliminated this weekend.

and it would be great if we got him back but we're talking about hopefully finding a coach to be here the next 5-10 years or longer. If we make the wrong hire we could easily drop down to where Auburn is right now. This is a crucial hire and just too important to be hasty. I want to make sure we get the right person.

MSU should just pay Shaka what he wants. He will bring in more money than he gets paid. Dan will just have to win at a higher rate so his salary can increase too. If Shaka wants 2.5 then MSU expects a top15 program annually from him when he signs the contract. Maybe it's time for MSU to expect a very high rate of return from its investment in a coach. Everyone says 2 is MSU's ceiling but how much more would MSU get from an increas of that by .5? How much is it worth to be a top15 program and an every other year sweet16+ team. How much is it worth to win a National Championship? How will this board feel if Illinois gets Shaka at 2.5 and he wins big knowing all we had to do was pay him that but we decided 2 was the highest we'd go? I say roll the dice and gulp big time and pay the man the money.

One recruit should not determine the coach. But its not just one. Pollard is also looking at who we higher and the longer we wait the longer he goes without having a relationship with our coach. That same relationship situation is the same with the players who have become hesitant after the retirement. I know its just next year but the first year of the new coach could possibly make or break him. If we get all the players we have signed now plus Pollard and moultrie stays, then we will have a very solid ball team next year. That would do great with recruiting. If we lose out on Pollard and moultrie goes pro and a signee leaves, it could be the worst season for Msu basketball in a long time. And without the head coaches relationship with younger high schoolers and high school coaches, a bad season could be greatly detrimental to future recruiting. This class is absolutely crucial.

On a related note, who was the idiot who said moultrie was his least favorite player in the last 12 years? That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen posted here.

I'm not sold enough on shaka yet to shelf out that type of cash. I mean he made a final four run in a year where vcu barely made the tournament. They just got really hot at the right time. This year they had to win the colonial to get a bid. Its not like shaka is mark few. Hes been there for 3 years and had a great run. Now id take him for sure, but in no way do I think he should be paid 2.5. Or even 2 for that matter. If we are playing the what if game, then what if we pay him the 2.5 you say to and then we stay in mediocrity? That would literally be one of the worst hires ever. I just feel that is too risky at this point

is worth picking the wrong coach. Not to mention that Moultrie is gone no matter who the next coach is and no matter how long and hard he recruits him to come back. If he's a guaranteed 1st round draft pick and he comes back, he's an idiot. Look at Tennessee. They rushed a coaching search and wound up with Derrick Dooley.

So now that's two players, or 40% of your potential starting lineup. I still maintain Moultrie is important. He hasn't said he's a definite. Until he does, the only presumption can be that he is coming back unless he's a secret commit to the NBA. That being said, no one will be surprised if he does go, and I wish him all the success in the world.

I don't think three weeks is rushing anything. Only 16 teams have anything of note left to play for, so most if not all coaches we want to talk to would be available. Find your man, get a deal done, and get him on campus by early April so he can talk to Moultrie and recruit Pollard.

Yep. Moultrie will go with the highest bidder - no matter who's doing thebidding.

At the very worst Moultrie is in the show at 1.5-2 million. It doesn't matter if we get Roy Williams or Cal, Arnett will be leaving us in a few short months.
