Just like anything else, smart development of datacenters are a win win for everyone. The problem is, people are seeing the $$$ behind it and are starting to put them anywhere. And Elon didn't help anything with the one he put in Memphis, which really shined a light on this practice.

The real winners are areas like northern VA, DFW, Chicago, Atlanta.......that planned these out, put them in certain places and did it years ago. They are printing money for the counties now.

Just like anything, the ones who get in late are the ones who end up scrambling.

It's troubling how easy it is for foreign entities to influence public opinion here. The data center panic is exhibit A.

China/Russia are continuously amplifying the online negativity surrounding data centers because they don't want us to build them. They are important and growing more important every day.

Look at the people you see online buying into the panic. It's generally, with few exceptions, dumbest people you know.

Don will have maga wanting data centers constructed all over rural America before lunch tomorrow. This is a good thing. Maga happy. NIMBYs happy. Great job, Trump.

I've neither talked to nor influenced by the Chinese or Russians.

all fun in games when it's built on your land or neighborhood and your utilities go up as well. Just like going all electric as a bad idea from democrats all in on data centers also bad. Also very few sustainability plans when these centers become obsolete, just like former computers that took up a building are on your phone? What then? Bunch of huge buildings. Just like all the dang malls that were built and then moved and rebuilt. Most of these companies snd people signing off on them care nothing about sustainability it's about moving to the next profitable trending thing

Wow, this was a difficult op-ed to actually read. It was so absurdly one sided that it was almost unbelievable.
The op-ed predominantly ignores details in favor of skewed claims.

In reality, data centers in general arent as bad as some claim and arent as good as some claim.

It’s true the AI industry has hurt its own cause by fueling speculative anxiety about mass unemployment. AI developers have also failed to explain how data centers benefit local communities.
YEP!
It shouldnt be a surprise to anyone that when the tech leaders, who really are Oligarchs at this point, constantly claim for years that huge amounts of jobs will be eliminated in the coming 1, 3, and 5 years- a lot of people then view data centers as dangerous to them and their family's security.

And since there are countless examples over the years of towns being on the short end of the stick regarding data center contracts, it shouldnt surprise anyone to see citizens pushing back and saying they either dont want the data center at all, or arguing that the deals arent good enough.

Mr. Trump is finally speaking up, with a Truth Social post Monday pointing out that data centers will provide “far lower taxes and jobs all over the place.” Please keep it up. The President rightly notes that if the bipartisan campaign against data centers succeeds, the winner will be the Chinese Communist Party.
This largely hasnt happened up to now. As a result, there is no justification to claim more data centers will make taxes drop and generate a net increase of 'jobs all over the place' will pop up.
Yes, there are examples like the one time payment to teachers in a rural Louisiana Parrish or Loudoun County VA taxes being lower due to data centers.
One time payments by definition arent recurring and dont benefit the area for years to come.
And for Loudoun County to be an example where taxes are lower, it needed to have over 250 data centers which handles over 2/3 of the world's internet traffic. That is such a clearly impossible to replicate, its dishonest to cite it as an example.

Data centers also generate scant pollution. Their CO2 emissions mainly stem from the natural gas plants that power them. But modern gas generators produce upward of 90% less fine particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide than a steel mill.
Um...ok cool, I guess?
This totally ignores the noise pollution that very much exists at many data centers. Also, comparing the air pollution a data center creates to a steel mill is odd.
Steel mills are well known to be one of the heaviest industrial polluters in the world. Comparing a data center(what size?) to a steel mill(what size?) is disappointing because of course it pollutes a lot less than one of the most polluting industries.

What could possibly be a good reuse for large steel and concrete, highly secure empty facilities? For profit prisons are looking forward to that day.

I'm convinced data centers are the new fracking. It will work and the alarmists will eventually get put to bed.

I'm over the water thing. They use less water than a golf course, which few complain about. As for power, make them create their own supply. Lastly, don't allow the employment of H1Bs.
Say that louder so "Hot Wheels" Abbott and the Texas GOP can hear it.

The solution is simple. 1. Build away from population centers. 2. Don't subsidize them with taxpayer money. Don't take my tax money I pay in from my measly job to subsidize an AI center that will eliminate the very job I paid taxes from. I had to laugh at one line in the article: "Businesses large and small use AI to boost productivity, which lets them pay workers more." Bwahahahaha! No they don't, and no they won't. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it. Businesses don't make changes to enable them to pay workers more; they make changes to lower costs which increases profits. Increased profits go to those with an equitable interest in the business. It would make no business sense to cut costs in payroll, and then add that cost right back to payroll in the form of raises for those that remain. (I recognize there are exceptions for retention of critical employees, etc.) But trust me, no business is pushing to go to AI because they want to pay their employees more.

The proposed data center that was drawn up for Clarksdale would use less water yearly than the two rice irrigation wells currently on the proposed site.
