This is how horrible the SEC Tournament bracket is...

State started off 2-0 in the tournament but since they lost yesterday, we will have to play 6 straight days to win it.

and doesn't have to play again until Saturday, and they're not even a #1 seed. I agree, it sucks. Hopefully we can stay hot for next week.

We put ourselves in this position by losing to Kentucky. They deserved it just as we would have if we had beaten them.

We could have just as easily earned them ourselves, but didn't do it. I still haven't seen a bracket with more than 8 teams in it that is any better than this one.

Then you will have 4 teams with only one loss, and yet, only two make the championship game.

If it's going to be double elimination, it should be all the way through your own side of thebracket, at the least. I understand wanting to have one game for the title - it just makes more sense that each 4 (or in this case 5) team bracket be double elimination to determine its rep for the title game.

I can promise you the coaches would vote 12-0 against that (14-0 next year). The 4 teams with 1 loss scenario isn't really any less fair than the old format where you often had 2 teams with 1 loss but 1 of them wins the championship while the other finishes 2nd.

the byes, what they are saying is that it is set up unfairly. There is too much reward for a good regular season. That's the point of a tournament. You seed based on the regular season to try to get the better matchups in the later rounds, but the point of a tournament is that everybody that makes it should have a chance to win it. Otherwise, why have a tournament?

One additional game vs the current format, at most 2, for a true double-elimination tournament

vs this:

USM won yesterday and will play again on Saturday. But they can't win the tourney. Those guys do thrive on being spoilers, so they just might win Saturday's game, then go home.

that makes sense.

Memphis is the winner of their pod/division. If USM wins Saturday and Memphis loses - they are both 2-1 and Memphis wins b/c they beat Southern.

USM is already out of contention regardless of what Memphis does. I don't think I've seen thatbefore in any type of major conference tournament.

Memphis has the head to head tiebreaker if USM wins their 3rd game and Memphis loses theirs.

What other 10-team double elimination tournament can you come up with that won't allow any team to play more than 6 games or any team to play more than once per day? I hear a lot of bitching about the current format, but nobody has come up with a better solution. And going back to 8 teams is NOT an option. That kept LSU out of a regional last year and with expansion 10 is the minimum we can take for the SEC tournament.

there is no way to do a 10team DE tournament when you can schedule 4 games a day and get them in.

the only other option is to allow the #1 seed pick which location they want to be in.
besides the byes and off days being a problem, playing 3 in a row at 12-3 is dang tough

5 teams at each location, double elimination, #1s get a bye. If you lose, you have to play again that day. Final Four meet up in Bham for single elimination on Friday andSat.

More primetime TV,location friendly, teams don't have to sacrifice a whole week.

What if the #1 seed got an automatic bye to the final? And the opposing team had beat them 7 consecutive times while drunk and wearing Victorian attire? Could we then say that all is fair because the #1 seed 'earned' their position?

With all that said, I'd watch that final.

I think a play-in game for 7-10, then use last years format would make more sense. Also, with the finals fairness issue, at least last years format seemed like the finals just matched the winners of two four-team tournaments, so whether you had a loss wasnt too odd. This year though, the semis start the single elimination.
