The fans and donors would have backed him. He should have had more spine.

that, if youre gonna make that claim. Byrne's the AD, he's been the AD for well over a year now. We started off w/ JSU and Byrne talked extensively about the attractive interstate matchup.

I dont really mind play USM honestly. I think it'll be fun. I'm sure they'll win a game or two, hopefully we'll win more than they will. We already play Houston, UAB, LA Tech, they're along the same lines w/ Souther, might as well make it an in state match up.

Even if Southern beats us every time we play we'll never lose recruits to USM because the SEC pull is too. So i'm happy to see it.

Templeton got blamed for the stop light at malfunction junction staying on red 2 seconds longer than green, so let's not start making excuses for Byrne here on this today.

Byrne should have given up his job for this? I am not wild about playing USM either, but good God, this is not worse than playing and getting beat in 17'in Ruston, LA. Losing to USM, while it may suck, will not be the end of the world. Byrne knows what he is doing, and if it sucked that bad, well, then he may be looking for his next "opportunity" It is alot easier to find a job while you have one than when you dont.

Is no reason for us to do the same.

And no, "we ain't skeered!1!!" But, it's not smart to run along the edge of a cliff, scared or no, just like it's not smart to play a decent-but-subpar team that hates your guts as your opener or squeezed between conference games. There's not fear, that's plain common sense.

We learned our lesson with Memphis; we'd beat the **** out of them every year and they'd only resent us for it all the more. Despite them winning less than once a decade, they managed to **** on Eli's senior year. Give them enough chances and they'll take away one or two, and they'll be sure to rub your noses in it. That's the thing with little man syndrome, they'll take that win or two and dwell on it while ignoring the 15-2 record you have over them... Their hatred makes them irrational and just dangerous enough.

he didn't stand a chance here. Digging in would have just meant he woudl have had to quit. He would not have won, I don't care if the board's famous cigar boys pounced on our President in person all at one time.

Actions could be proactive.

What if you were a relatively new university president with political connections who wanted to make more connections with political leaders including the presumptive future governor of the state? Having some football games, keeping all the money inside the state rather than spending money to institutions outside Mississippi sounds very reasonable doesn't it? Certain members of the legislature would like it. So would a certain lieutenant governor.

....like the poster above said. In this case I would say "Screw being proactive." It's not worth any potential goodwill. There is no expectation out there to play them. We have avoided it for 20 years now.

msu and MAKE them schedule usm. you gotta love that rebel gov....LOL. other than the gov i don't know of any one elected official who would even begin to have the juice to MAKE msu play southern. byrne or keenan did it and all the message board bs in the world doesn't make it anything other than the no win deal for msu that it is.

MSU doesn't compete with little Miss Southern for recruits. MSU is a SEC team that should eadily beat a little CUSA team. Playing MTSU, UAB and LaTech is what matters at MSU.

but you must be somewhat of a political novice if you think Haley is the only one with the "juice" to make this happen. Haley is about as powerful as you can get as a MS Governor. But, constitutionally, the office is 3rd at best in power in the state. The most powerful office in the state is held by a USM alum.

of his alumni/fans vehemently oppose is also too stupid to accomplish much for the school. What most people are missing here is that it`s not the dollars ans cents etc etc it`s the fact that the majority of the fan base doesn`t want the game and it was crammed down their throats. Somebody`s gonna pay for this sooner or later.

politics as much as it is about funding. And I understand that is a thin line. But, someone who can control your funding wants to do something, you are probably going to do it.

Hell, I'm tired of the conjecture. I am going to ask somebody.

Politicians have no business being in sports (like this).

No proof has been bought to the table on this, but if so... Strike two Phil!

Yea, if he forces USM on the big state schools, he better not be planning on more than 1 term.

That won't sit well with the majority of the state.

I liked OMlawdog's analogy earlier. Neither the Republican or Democratic parties will agree to a debate with the Green party. Why? Not because they're afraid of losing, but they have nothing to gain by even getting involved in the debate no matter whether they "win" the debate or not. Meanwhile, win or lose, the Green party has everything to gain, and just by being recognized by either party, they are legitimized.

Just by playing USM, you give them some power in the state, win or lose, and I'm ticked that Byrne is doing that for them, because it hurts us almost as much.

Most of you who don't mind seeing this series have not been around many USM fans in your lifetime. I was just at their Virginia game this past weekend and a ton of their fans actually believe that Chad Bumphis and Patrick Patterson had them as 50/50 going into signing day. They told me this to my face as serious as a heart attack. Anyway you look at these games this is a LOSE/LOSE situation for MSU and anyone who doesn't see this needs their head and mental capacity examined. The only good thing that will come out of it will be a W in the record book. I would rather play Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and risk that loss. You people who grew up and currently live north of Forrest county Mississippi do not have a clue of the negatives of this series. It's as almost if they have won a national championship when USM beats MSU or Ole Piss in anything. Every Bulldog fan knows what losing feels like but just the thought of losing to them makes Maine look like losing to Texas and Vince Young in the 06 rose bowl. I hope we never feel it but those of you who wanted it deserve the feeling that you will have. I haven't left a MSU game one sec early in the past 10 years so do not think I'm not a true fan. Just know what it's like to be from south MS.
