To have that much more is telling of how good seasons can get MSU fans motivated. the leader of the sales of MSU and UM tags flipped flopped during even the Croom error.

In January of 2010, our brethren from Oxford had 50 more tags on the road than we did. In April of this year, we had 68 more than them. That's a pretty good turnaround for a town that was always considered "Ole Miss Territory".

.... Coahoma county is unbelievable. It, historically, hasalways been an OM stronghold. I guess things have changed since I graduated from Lee.....

I just wonder how many of the Ole Miss tag buyers actually went to Ole Miss at any point? Even though they are not as bad as Bama, they still have a lot of walk on alumni.

But I know that the Alabama fans here in Mississippi had to commit to purchasing 200 tags here before they would be produced. I wonder if the same scenario is present in Alabama since I don't see any Mississippi tags offered on the Alabama Department of Revenue site.

I want to say LA does too. I'm wondering why AL doesn't. I know we sell LSU, AU, and BAMA because I've seen all of those myself

There's something about a committee from each school submitting a design to the Alabama department of transportation, but I think the committee is appointed by the governor, or something like that. Essentially, they created a condition that does not de jure disallow out of state college license plates, but some paradoxical condition would have to be met for them to be created. <div>
</div><div>edit: They do expressly ban the consideration of out-of-state college and university tags.http://law.onecle.com/alabama/motor-vehicles-and-traffic/32-6-67.html</div><div>
</div><div>I'm going to use my connections and see if I can get that requirement changed. Wish me luck.</div>

that prohibits the sale of car tags associated with out-of-state universities.Local alumni areworking to get that changed, but have been trying for years with little success. We've involved other schools across the region, and even offered to let the money go Alabama public schools, the highway patrol, etc. While the politicianscomplain about budget shortfalls in one venue, they turn down this revenue stream (albeit a small one) in another.
It would help if Mississippi would do what Georgia did: demand reciprocity or else you won't sell tags of universities within the other state.

Seems it's all regional schools ranging from the small surrounding schools like WKU, to the ACC schools. Fine with me as it brings in revenue.

Code of Alabama, Section 32-6-67.

Furthermore, I've written all of my legislators asking that they revise the law to allow out of state colleges, with proceeds from the sales going to K-12 education funds in the counties of registration as a means to generate funds during difficult economic times. I stated that this was similar to neighboring states disbursement of out of state colleges tags (including Alabama and Auburn)in Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi. I noted that Georgia hasconsidered legislation that would not allow Alabama universities in Georgia as Alabama doesn'tallow Georgia university tags.

I've asked to have the Mississippi State Alumni Association recognized as a private entity, thereby sidestepping the law, once again with proceeds going toward education.

In light of the recent budget cuts, you would have thought this would make sense.

I sent this to my representative, my senator, and the Governor's office. I did not receive a single response from any of them. Not even a "thanks for your letter, we'll take it under advisement."

This only furthers my belief that the majority of state governments, especially Alabama, are comprised of functional morons.

That's the prepaid tution program, for those of you from out of state. It tanked because the economy fell and that it's hard to find investments that can grow at a greater rate than the cost of college tuition. My rep said it was an interesting idea, but it went nowhere. My wife's uncle is a state rep (but not for my district), so I'll talk with him personally. If I can sell it to him and he can get it to become law, I expect to be thanked by my fellow Alabama sixpackers. I expect nothing less than free chat for life.

Let me suggest that you get the B'Ham Alum Chapter hopped up and organized to push this thing in a heavy way. Then a group from the Chapter (NOT the socially inept dweebs) needs to go to Children's Hospital in B'Ham and get in front of the Hospital's PR marketing people and present the notion that the Chapter wants to "adopt" Children's Hospital as its charity of choice. Present your first project as y'all are looking to get a law passed that allows MState vanity plates in Alabama, and that y'all want as a part of that law authorization for some percentage of the extra "vanity fee" charged by the State of Alabama to be paid directly to Children's Hospital Foundation in support of the hospital's mission. Now how can the good legislators of the Great State of Alabama refuse to help the chilrens? You need something like this to compel those MFers to do the right thing.

My understanding is that one of the Bama alum chapters in Mississippi had a law just like this passed in Mississippi and most of the vanity fee from the sale of Bama plates in MS goes to Blair Batson. Great idea and also promotes the sale of those damn plates since the money is going to a charitable organization and not the f'n state.

The alumni chapter here in Smith county is making a push with state of Texas to get MSU tags available right now. It seems it is the same sort of thing where alumni have to commit to buy a certain number of them (ballpark of 200 I think).

Throw the "think of the children" argument right back at them. I like that more than bailing out some ill-conceived government program. I only ever recommended that as a political sweetener.<div>
</div><div>I hate to say it, but cooperation with other universities would definitely make this thing more likely to work. If we can get the UM, UT, UGA, and UF alums on board too, it could get done.</div>

chapter. On the page you can find a link under the "Links" tab that'll take you to the "sign-up" list for MSU tags in Texas. I'm hoping you guys are using the same thing.

Houston Chapter

Texas License Plate signup

I also just noted that the link to signup is wrong on the website and I've sent an e-mail to the Houston chapter president to correct.

Edited to add the link. Sorry for the delay. I pushed submit on my last message and then my internet went out as I was trying to edit the post to put the link in. My bad.

These exact discussions have been had.Schools are already on board that want to be, progress has been made, but not enough to get a passable bill. What we really need are votes, and the monies we're talking about weren't enough toentice them outright. Please do talk to any lawmakers you know, and if they're amicable to the idea, let them know thatconcerned alumsfrom a variety of schools areworking on the next go.</p>

I passed a car that had a big red Nebraska "N" slapped over the Biloxi lighthouse on the MS tag.
Not sure why exactly, but it pissed me off a little.

This from the state who told my client that he would get his tax refund, when the money became available or else they would have to take it out of the department of education fundresources.

and their PR team hounding the **** out of Alabama legislators to sponsor a bill that allows ALL out-of-state university affinity plate "special fees" to be diverted to said charitable hospital. The problem as I see it is that, heretofore, apparently only the out-of-state carpetbaggers have been asking for the law change.

I agree with the PR angle. Screw the usual bribes it takes to get the legislators to act. I figure they could sell at least 20k out of state plates, which at $50 per plate amounts to $1 million a year to Children's.
