to say we are going to be top 20 in defense next year and top 10 in 2010 is really a huge stretch. Our defensive coaches seem to be quality coaches so I hope there isn't a total dropoff, but I cannot see how this unit will maintain or improve upon the past couple of years.

Well the losses on offense are not much to be concerned about.

On defense on the DL, Bowman is a big loss as he's played well this year. Hopefully another DT will step up though.

Douglas has been a nice player at LB but I haven't noticed a real big drop between his play and that of some of the 2nd string backers so I think we'll be able to replace their ok.

We'll trade O'Quinn for A. Johnson so fine there.

Safety is the point where we just don't know - Smith has gotten a fair amount of PT so he won't be green. He does hit hard but not sure what his upside is. I've seen Charles Mitchell get a fair number of snaps as well so hopefully those two guys will be fine there. Then we just need a few guys to provide depth.

Given that we haven't had many sacks and int's this year, I don't expect to see a real big dropoff in defense next year unless the new safeties just play horrible.

and I trust the defensive coaches a hell of a lot more than the offense -- they actually, you know, develop players.

The losses on offense are addition by subtraction. None of those starters will be missed.

Even if we kept these guys we would not win over 4 games. Look at our schedule and our lack of production on all sides of the ball.

Make it stop......please

Bo Walters has 6 tackles. Jamie Jones has 5. Douglas has 73. I'd say there is a bit of drop off.

I'm just saying when Douglas is not in the game (which isn't often) I don't notice a big drop off in play from the LB spot. Next year Chaney or Whilte will probably slide into that spot and I think K. Brown has done a pretty decent job this year and I've seen Bo make a couple of nice plays among his six stops. My point is that he's a good player but not irreplaceable.

He is a great player, just all over the field and a sure tackler.

I think the biggest losses are the three safeties. Pegues, Fitzhugh and Glanton are all good players and have been the reason MSU's secondary has been so good the last two years.

I always thought 2009 would be a rebuilding year, and that the fanbase would give croom a pass because he would have back to back bowl seasons under his belt. Now, not so much.

Potential Lineups:

Defense

CB: Washington
CB: A. Johnson
FS: Z. Smith
SS: Mitchell

OLB: Chaney, he will be granted a Medical since he didn't redshirt
MLB: C. White, from Juco
OLB: KJ Wright

DE: McPhee, Juco AA, tons of sacks
DT: Love
DT: Williams
DE: Burns or one of the young guys. I like Stigers

Offense

WR: McRae
WR: Clark/Robinson
RB: Dixon/Conner
FB: Stallworth/Ducre
QB: Lee

TE: Green
LT: Sherrod
LG: Jenkins
C: Looney
RG: Brignone
RT: Saulsberry

Special Teams

PK: Brauchle, Juco AA
P: Hutchins, Juco AA
PR/KR, Langston, Juco player of the year

Biggest potential dropoff will be at Safety and depth at DT. LB will be weak if Chaney doesn't return. RT is still a concern. Tobias Smith should factor in at guard. Phillip Freeman may factor in at tackle.

Biggest loss is on the Dline. I know we haven't gotten any pass rush, but Bowman and McRaney (along w/ Pegues) turn this defense from average to really good. Bowman and McRaney are really active against the run and the pass, and Bailey and Burns are also good against the run.
Add onto that losing Douglas, Pegues, and Fitzhugh; and you're looking at a whole lot of uncertainty next year.
You don't just replace DTackles like that.

we have at least gotten Smith and Mitchell some significant PT to get them ready for next year. If Chris White comes in as advertised and Chaney is back, then I don't have any worries about LB, and we still have Mighty Mouse (#52).

I also really don't see any drop-off at DE. I like Tim Bailey, but it is not like he is a difference maker. At DT, losing Bowman hurts, but I think Love continues to improve. Anthony Johnson for O'Quinn is a push. Will the defense be better? Hell no, you never lose that many and improve, however, I think they can be solid enough. We definitely aren't looking at Ron Cooper style defense next year.

As for the offense, we really aren't losing much. The concern there: we also aren't getting any better. Especially at OL.

Offense -

QBs will be crappy as usual
RBs should be good
WRs could be improved
OL looks better
FB looks better
TE looks okay

Defense -

CBs as good or better
LBs depend on Chaney but could be good
Safety will certainly not be as good
DE/DL I think will be as good and might be better

Again, I say this hoping a new staff can come in and develop them.

I know what you are saying. It looks like this curent staff isn't going to be able to put it together. last year Om was down, Bama was still getting it together. It's getting nothing but tougher and Croom isn't staying ahead of the curve. ya'll certainly have enough decent players on offense to at least be a threat to score. We would have won 6 games with last year's players with this staff, including the game in Starkville. But on paper if Croom couldn't do anything with the current bunch, his odds on winning with next year's bunch looks slim.

He is undergoing 2 seperate knee operations and won't have contact in the spring. I don't think we can expect much out of him.
