OK the Cardinals are down 5-3 in the ninth. He has Jamie Garcia pinch-running at second base, and he has Adam Wainwright pinch hitting to lay down a bunt, which Wainwright does successfully. This results in a throwing error from Aaron Heilman at third base, which allows Garcia to score making it 5-4. Skip Shumaker then hits a ground ball to first which Adam LaRoche throws away trying to throw out the tying run at home, which allows Adam Wainwright to score the winning run.

How many managers would have the balls to allow two of their rotation guys to pinch hit and pinch run? I think having Wainwright bunt was a great idea- a lot of times, the best bunter on the team in the NL is a pitcher, and you save a pinch hitter doing that.

I love it. And stuff like this is why Tony LaRussa will never manage Team USA in the WBC.

He expects contributions every night from 1-25 on the roster in some capacity or another. And he's certainly not married to any one school of thought regarding the game. He's willing to do anything to get a W. Wasn't he the first to toy with batting his pitcher 8th?
