This Loss Hurt! Thoughts on the Game and the Season

This loss hurt. Not just because it keeps the team from being .500 and rightfully accepting a bowl game. Not just because it was to our rival (don't kid yourselves, Iowa is our main rival now). Not just because Iowa was the most mortal fourth-ranked team to ever play in Memorial Stadium.

This loss hurt because it subverted a potentially powerful narrative. Nebraska had a two-game win streak. The team was playing better. Looking better. Fewer penalties. Better play calling. More players were healthy.

Beating two top-ten teams at the end of the season would have provided unquestionable optimism to sustain most folks through the off-season. It would have taken the sting out of those unconscionable losses earlier in the season. The national media would have eaten it up: team goes through growing pains but finds itself as season progresses.

Instead, many of the same problems plaguing the Huskers in the first game came back in the final game. I say "many" and not "all" because the defense improved as the season continued, albeit from a very low bench mark.

Nebraska didn't lose yesterday because it lacked talent.

Nebraska didn't lose yesterday because of injuries.

Nebraska didn't lose yesterday because the players' minds were poisoned by Bo Pelini.

Nebraska lost yesterday because it didn't execute. It lost because its quarterback is no better now than during spring ball. It lost because of a cavalcade of personal foul penalties. It lost because of terrible play calls that didn't account for how terrible its quarterback is.

Folks will say--and not without merit--that we need more talent. Better recruits. Of course. All teams can use more talent. But this season could have been special with the players we have now.

Next season the schedule takes a turn for the worse. But by then, I'm sure we'll have several new narratives to make us all feel better.

We have talent certain positions but not overall as a team. Our offensive line was average our secondary was average our LBers played most of the time hurt or couldn't play because of injury we had no pass rushers coming off the edges to help our secondary and we have a mistake prone QB that makes too many terrible decisions and that was the biggest reason why we lost yesterday QB play is a key to any team that is going to worth a damn.

Riley teams at OregonSt were penalized an awful lot and his first Nebraska team was one of the worst that is another concern of mine moving forward.

Seems like I woke up from a nap and we are back to 2004 all over again that does not mean I support the thought of having Peelini back just that the two seasons seem eery.

The transition from a high and low Bo Pelini to the Mike Riley era certaining had its ups and downs, but Nebraska is in the Top 3 in the B1G West right now.

1. Iowa
2. Northwestern
3. Nebraska

Wisconsin has plenty of work and isn't the same program they were in 2010 to 2014. Gary Anderson wasn't the right fit.

Minnesota has work post Jerry Kill. Nice win over Illinois under new coach.

Purdue beat Nebraska highlighting the need for a QB.

Illinois doesn't have a permanent head coach.

Mike Riley lost 7 games by a total of 40 points. He has brought competitive football to Lincoln, with a solid upset win over MSU.

Nebraska needs a QB. Tommy Armstrong, Jr. needs to become prudent within the offense. Too many 50/50 balls and turnovers.

5-7 doesn't cut it at Nebraska. But, Nebraska was in every game in 2015 and the ground to cover is within a reasonable site.

I expect Nebraska to compete against everyone next year.

Lack of consistency though, far too many turnovers and penalties.

Nebraska is extremely undisciplined on both sides of the ball. Clean that up, and Nebraska is right there with the best in the B1G. Cleaning that up may be a bigger challenge than many think, but last year at this time many were saying that Ferentz wouldn't win 9 games again at Iowa, talent level was way too low, coaches had lost touch with the game, recruiting was bad, etc. Look what a year can do - and Nebraska had the excuse of a year one coach. Give Riley a spring and pre-season with the team and Nebraska could be right where Iowa is right now.
