This might be it

Obviously it's not my decision; it's up to K, Mickey, and the family. But they have to consider the quality of his remaining time. He is turning seventy, after all. We on the Board can't be selfish. Duke basketball was great before K (think Bubas) and will continue to be. I will support Duke basketball no matter what.

Hoping for a comfortable recovery for K and a great life thereafter, wherever that entails.

Wait a second. You are what, about 65? Are you at the point of "considering the quality of your remaining time"? I hope not! I think you are Mark Twaining it (reports of my demise...).

I have great confidence that the staff do and will give K the support he needs to continue to command his army for at least a few more years.

But if not I'm only 63 and I'll gladly volunteer.

I think in saying "this might be it" you're being a little over dramatic, but if in the last 24 hours this is the first time any Duke fan has thought the end might be near then they're equally as out of touch.

Listen, we know he's not going to coach forever. We also know the last 10 months have been trying on him physically, mentally and emotionally. Being that the Team USA thing is now in the rearview mirror is a positive, IMO. Him coaching at Duke and at this level is hard enough for someone his age, but doing it with the right people around him and the right support staff leads me to believe he can still be great for another three to five years, health permitting, of course.

All of that said, you don't become successful by doing things half-***. And we all know that K is not one to cut corners. Hell, that's why he's had a knee replacement, work on his left ankle, a hernia surgery and now a back procedure in the last 10 months. How many 70-year-old's do you know that could endure all of that and still be going the way he has been?

Liftee: I'm not suggesting that K will spend his time in an oxygen tank or iron lung. There's plenty for him to do: motivational speaking, fund raising for Duke, writing, etc, etc. It's just that there does come a time when it's best for you and your family to back off a little. You were close: I'm 68, going on my favorite number, and I'm more active now than when I worked. Nobody is talking "demise" here.

I think Coach K will know when it's time and will let all know ahead of time. If he feels he's not 100 per cent he's gonna acknowledge it. I also believe his family will have input in it. Until that time comes he's our coach. I know our rivals are just about to crap in their pants hoping this is indeed it. I hope he coaches so long that hof coach roy williams says I've had enough . Sooner or later K is going to hang it up...but right now...not a chance.
K is pretty damn tough, and if he had intentions to leave he would suck it up and coach through all the season (since it would be his last). The fact he's having the surgery now, and plans on returning means he's not ready to retire just yet (at least that's how I see it).

Sat 5 rows behind bench for Elon game, K had as much energy that night as 5 years ago & with a herniated disk. The surgery & month off will refresh him mentally. When K returns it will be like a B12 shot for the team.

I won't pretend to understand how serious a herniated disc is, but considering how recently he has talked about feeling great and projecting 5 more years, I have a hard time thinking anything short of -- God forbid -- a terminal diagnosis would change that plan.

The conspiracy theory I'm more inclined to buy into is that this allows Grayson to come back sooner on Coach Capel's word, showing Capel's independence and K's flexibility and trust. (And by "buy into," I mean "start.")

I tend to agree.
* K gets surgery he needs -- I have had back surgery...he will be a changed man when he returns.
* Capel gets to demonstrate his head coaching cred again.
* Grayson gets to come back sooner under Capel...
