This might play into the Newton saga

<div style="text-align: left;"> Sure it would. If they offer Simms and he commits, the odds Newton comes to State increase greatly. I'm sure UT would take him if Newton just plain wanted to be a Vol, but I couldn't see them offering two JUCO guys in addition to the high school guy they picked up already.

first order of buisness is to take the deuce from Rob Elliot. Then he will beat out anybody else; yes even Tyler Russell. This will NOT be a two quarterback system. He will be the starting guy against Memphis and kill a cornerback on about play five. Meanwhile Relf will either be a fullback or playing for Alabama St. or the Comegy.

Thanks for coming.</p>

We've got a 6'4, #230 qb from here in MS who made commitment to the program when he had options and a running back that dragged Ole Miss through hell and you're throwing both under the bus over a juco quarterback who's never shown anything at the DI level and
has had off the field problems.

Did you people not learn anything while laughing at Orgeron over the Schaeffer mess?

Maybe he's offering Simms because he knows he's out of the running for Newton.

like steal a laptop and get kicked out of school. And he was the back up to the back up at florida. Oh yeah, the second string was a pocket passer, guess he fit into mullen's offense pretty well

Having both Newton and Russell makes us a stronger team than just having Russell. It would give us the chance to have solid QB play (which will hopefully lead to more wins) for the next four years.

Newton should know the system and be more ready to win right away. The competition between Newton and Russell should only make Russell better and more dangerous when his time comes.

Of course you're completely right. No need to sign another QB for 4 years because we've got Tyler Russell. We're set. No need to sign a potentially even better QB, or at the very least one who will push Russell in practice for the #1 job. That kind of retarded thinking is what's got our football program in the *******.

Newton was Fla's 5th leading rusher in 2007, scoring 3 TD's as the BACK-UP

in the mix other than UT and State?

I have swerved into a Newton rumor. I can't stand the recruiting stuff as I hate wading thru the garbage
that usually amounts to squat.

I know the guy recruiting Newton for Kansas State. He said Newton will go to MSU and has yet to turn him. This asst coach
did not know I am a MSU alum so I hope he wasn't blowing smoke.

As of today (October 2009), it is down to us and Kansas State.

I'm simply saying that there are lots of folks on here who sound like OM fans 5 years ago. Saying that a juco QB with off the field problems is about to come in and save the world. Hell, Coach34 and a few others have already floated the idea that Russell might as well transfer.

Me? I think I'll wait until the guy at least throws a pass in college before anointing him a god.

Having said that Pat, I hope we sign Newton. Just like I hope we sign every other good prospect we're in on.

doesn't mean that it won't work for us. Especially since the conditions are way more favorable.

I think that a lot of people are basing the Newton love off of the fact that we do have some really good players coming back next year, and we are doing fairly will with an inadequate QB. If we had a decent QB, we should make a bowl.

If people are worried about Ole Miss fans laughing at us and saying "Cam Newton is the next Brent Scheaffer" so what? At least we're putting our "Scheaffer" into an offense that fits, an offense that he has run before, an offense with a competent offensive coaching staff, and we're going to give him the entire spring and summer to learn the offense and get used to our players instead of giving him a week to do so. Not to mention, as I have said before, I feel like Newton is better than Scheaffer anyway. How is this any different than Ole Miss fans saying that Dan Mullen is the next Ed Orgeron? It's pretty obvious that they are wrong about that, to.

if they had tailored the offense to him ,which they didn't do until the end of his career. He was a lot better.

Just like some of you say we really dont know about Newton, well how do we really know what Russell can do? When's the last time a Mississippi High School quarterback shined in college before Dustin Almond went to USM? Probably Ro Miller at UM. Mississippi has a history of not producing great highschool qbs so you better dang well hope we get CM. I hope Russell breaks records and hurts feelings at STATE but putting your stock totally in him is absurd. Stock the kitchen full of qbs and get off this mentality of one guy every four years.

half of the **** you read about him on here so ridiculous. He's a true freshman QB in the SEC, redshirting like he should, and seems like half our fanbase thinks he's a flop.

Getting Newton would be great for everybody, including Russell. It'd be the first time I can remember that State actually doesn't have to force a QB into playing out of sheer necessity.

I've been trying to tell everyone on here that Newton is NOT, I repeat NOT going to UT. Everyone in Knoxville that follows the Vols knows that Kiffin is after Simms b/c he couldn't sway Cam away from MSU. It also wouldn't make sense for him to end up at Kansas State either. The kid wants to play in the SEC and his best opportunity is with us. Deal with it people. We are about to get a qb that can see over the D-line. And we're about to have quality depth at the most important position in football. Russell will get his chance and should be ready to take over in a year or 2. Honestly, I'm still amazed that some of ours fans are wringing their hands over the possibility that Russell will not be our starter as a redshirt freshman. Unbelievable. <shaking head in amazement>
