This Torbush situation is pretty funny

Kansas fans are tickled to death to have this guy as their new DC, citing his success at UNC mostly, while most, if not all, State fans are either happy or don't give a damn at all that he's leaving. I was about to rain on their parade a little but they have one of those stupid "apply for access" sites, so it will have to wait for now.

Which is funny, because you would think the logical move would be to look at his most recent numbers, our defense this year, and take that into consideration. They obviously think it's best to look at his success from way back when, instead.

They could easily make an argument that his numbers were skewed this season since we played the toughest schedule in the country against some of the top offenses in the nation as well.

I'm not happy to see him go. I think he is a good DC. Yeah we had some crappy games on defense, but it was also only his first year with these guys. It's not like we had a stacked defense talent wise. We lost a couple of bad *** players from last year. Again, I'm not saying this is a huge loss, but at this point I still think it is a loss for our team. We'll see who we get, and then see just how big (or small) of a loss this really is.

I didn't think Torbush was that bad outside of the Auburn game. I though we mixed up coverages with some situational blitzing. Not sure what more you could ask for. We had some obvious weaknesses in the secondary that limits a coach. I saw us blitz from the corners, both safety positions, as well as the different linebackers. I saw us both rush 3 and blitz on 3rd & long and saw us get burned using both strategies. Not saying he was great but he was not bad. And sometimes it is talent more than coaching.

I think the Auburn game was a case of the coach and his players not being familiar with each other. Whatever it was, the Auburn game was clearly an exception.

That said, I am glad he was gone. At MSU we don't need a DC that's just average. We need a good DC.

There's all kind of reasons for that, but the 3 man fronts, etc. cause you to think, we might to do better.

while he didn't have the talent to be SEC champs or anything my problem was with his play calling and schemes. I distinctly remember yelling at the TV/field many times this year because of the formation we were in given a situation. Facing a team that couldn't stop our four man rush we would have them backed up at 3rd and 15 or something and then he chooses a three man front with a soft zone giving a 16 yard cushion. There were just WAY too many of those situations. And maybe he was trying to keep the other team guessing but most of the time it looked like he was just randomly picking the defensive set. Maybe I'm wrong, but he just did not seem very situationaly aware to me.

I think it is a bad move for Torbush in regards to what weaknesses you saw with him at State, mainly being able to cover receivers consistently. He won't be able to improve a Kansas defense since almost all the Big 12 does is throw. I guess the only thing is that his job may be safer there because no one plays good D in the Big 12.

I just hope Mullen hires someone good and capable of creating a solid SEC defense. It's kind of crappy how we got Torbush in the first place, as I remember Mullen saying that Torbush asked for the job and he kind of just fell into Mullen's lap when Mullen said he really didn't know who he would get for a DC. I hope Mullen doesn't have this trouble any more after proving he is that hopeful on the offensive side, maybe a good DC will want to contribute to that when Mullen starts looking.

I think it doesn't look good for us that in 1 year of a staff we're already letting folks leave and it aint because other schools are begging for them. Except for the Auburn game, our defense played pretty well considering (1) it's his 1st year (2) lots of young players (3) not a lot of talent (4) and we faced some of the best teams/offenses in division 1.

1. Mullen was all over his *** and told him he better get his act together or there will be a new DC in 2011

2. They don't play defense in the Big 12 and they have "high powered offenses" so it's okay to give up 450 yards a game so he'll have some job security. If your defense is only giving up 400-425ypg to the other offense, you're seen as a good defensive coridinator in the Big 12.

Guys he gave up 77 to Oklahoma while he was at Texas A&M and he didn't get fired, that's saying something. I'm tired of 3 man fronts on 3rd and long, I wanna blitz the **** outta the QB. Dan will get us a better DC.

Besides Auburn is everyone forgetting the debacle of Houston, GT, and Arky?

Arky is most vivid to me. We didn't pressure Mallett and he killed us.

I won't blame Torbush for Houston even though they did put up alot of yards. They threw the ball 50+ times and there was no holding when there obviously was. Also, I saw us get to Houston's QB plenty of times and he made absolutely ridiculous throws. If they didn't have that QB, we woulda beat them pretty handily that game. We got called for holding and they didn't. The refs called us over the line when we weren't. The CUSA refs clearly cost of that game, not Torbush.
