Sylvester Croom is the best coach to replace Tubberville. Leach scores points, but scoring is nothing when you give up 62 points. Croom would not have to rebuild. His coaching style fits the Auburn talent. He defeated Auburn, and Alabama with division II talent. Took Miss. State to a bowl game, won coach of the year. He has experience at all levels of football. He has coached under 2 Great coaches (Bear Bryant and Mike Holmgren). He has NCAA championships as a coach and a player. He also coached a Superbowl defense at Green Bay. He would have the talent he needs at Auburn when he gets there. Passing 50 times per game will not work in the SEC. Sure Florida scores points but they do most of there damage running the ball, great special teams, and a fast defense. Sly Croom always had terrific defenses at MSU. He was just at a school where recruiting top players was almost impossible. He was never given a fair shot at the Bama job. Offense sales Tickets but Defense Wins Championships. Ask Miami 92 if you don't believe me. Oklahoma humiliated Texas Tech that happens to them every year against big fast defenses like that. In case you haven' t noticed every defense in the SEC is big and fast. Remember what happened when Terry Bowden tried that type of offense in the SEC. Pressure burst pipes a quarterback won't have all that time to hold the ball in the SEC, especially when the defense knows that is all you wanna do. The defenses in the Big 12 do not compare to those of the SEC. Croom's resume speaks for itself. None of the coaches mentioned have his credentials.</p>

My brother-in-law is a huge Auburn fan and I'd never hear the end of him bitching about Crxxm. On second thought, I guess he'd just be getting me back for the past 3 years where he's never heard the end of me bitching about Crxxm (I supported Crxxm until the South Carolina game of 2006).

I love the logical pitfall of assuming that since he coached under great coaches, he therefore is a great coach himself. Not to mention the "great defenses" ol' Sly coached up during his tenure, especially the one that fell from the 20s to 39 after playing the big rivalry game (goal 4 of 4).

I was away from the board for a few weeks after Gustav, so I am sure I missed some defining moment in SixPack lore, but what is up with the folks who spell Croom's name, Crxxm?

it started in the chat after one of the games (maybe auburn) where someone spelled his name: Crxxm and said his name didnt deserve the O's in it based on the offensive performance that night

"He also coached a Superbowl defense at Green Bay."

He did? I thought he was OC of San Diego and Detroit during the SB years for the Packers in the 90's, and then came over to serve on Mike Sherman's staff as RB coach.
