Sitting here bored on a Wednesday night and did a little research. The “modern” era of Thomasville football began in 1959 when George Cushwa was hired. There have been eight coaches in that 67 years. Below are their winning percentages.
Benjie Brown 86.1
Allen Brown 78.3
Kevin Gillespie 72.7
George Cushwa 68.7
Doug Robertson 66.7
Gil Maxwell 45.7
Bradley George 37.5 (active)
Wes Mattera 18.2
For calculation purposes, ties were not counted. Cushwa and Allen Brown are in the North Carolina Hall of Fame.

Over the years I have to the conclusion that coaching must account for 50 to 70% of the success or failure of a high school football program. In all likelihood the say could/should be said of coaching for each sport.

They are as athletic and fast as they have been in years. Just does not seem to clicking in Tville right now with the offense and defense. They should not lose a game in that league but are fighting to get to .500 on the season. They got what they wanted (the school board and admin team) and the proof is in the results.

True, Wow. But with three different superintendents during the year leading up to the mass exodus of athletic personnel, the common denominator is the school board.

I apologize for letting all you guys down in 2014. Very eye opening and humbling experience to say the least. I am very appreciative of all the folks in Tville that treated me and my family with respect despite our lack of success. Good luck to the Dogs the rest of this season and in the future.

Classy response, coach. With a little time, I believe you would have turned things around. I know the environment was very different than the one where you’ve had so much success. For this fan, no apologies necessary.

Hopefully Thomasville will give the current coaches time to turn things around. At some point they should figure out when coach Brown can't win and you go through 5 coaching changes its not the coaches fault.

Pretty much apples to oranges. Look at the schedule and compare it to this year’s….arguably the weakest schedule in Thomasville history. But I certainly agree about the need for stability. During that same time, there have been eleven superintendents.

I feel sure the current coach is fine. Nobody in the administration had ever hired a high school coach. And not sure anybody on the school board ever played a sport. Positive none of them played football at any level. So frankly, I doubt they’re paying attention. Don’t think they really care. I have no idea what progress should be expected of the current coaching staff. But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.

Dude, we played weak schedules when we won our last championships in 1A. When we moved up to 2A we played in a weak CCC besides Salisbury. Lost many of the non conference games against bigger schools... similar to what we are doing now. I don't know what's with you and some fans but you guys are a good 15 plus years late on complaining about weak schedules and such. This ain't nothing new.🤷‍♂️

I don't live in town to know all the current admin but this been a train wreck a long time coming. Thomasville been dead since around 2013, and honestly we showed sighs of falling off when we moved down to 1A in the late 90s. Luckily, had that good group of players and Benjie in the mid 2000s.

For progress, like to see the team finish with winning record. Its possible.

My reference was to Allen’s last two teams, with him retiring again after the 2013 season. That last two years, the ‘Dogs played a very stiff non-conference schedule. They made it to the third round in 2012, beat Lincolnton 55-14 and lost to East Lincoln, the state champion. The next year they lost to Lincolnton In the playoffs.
I’d say a winning record is not only possible, but likely. Or at the least, a .500 season. We have three more years of the current conference schedule. That should certainly help.

Sure the non conference schedule was insane, that's understandable. However, we didn't win the conference despite how bad as it was. That 2012 Lincolnton team was 6-5, not one of their best. Coach Brown finished 6-8, then 5-7 his last year. So yeah, nothing new. Rather have patience and have stability.

Yeah, .500 or better. Might surprise a team or two if they learn how to score and play STs.
