While I would rather have Thompson than Sanders, I now think I can crap in one hand and want in another. After reading Brandt's blog quoting Carlos Sr., I think they both end up in fantasy land. We needed Thompson.

Really, I think it makes the most sense for Thompson to go to Ole Miss, if he were really just comparing situations.

We lose 3 out of our 4 DEs on our 2 deep, and the 4th will be a senior in 2010. So, the playing time selling point should be in our favor. Then, you throw in that Quentin Groves, who apparently is Thompson's brother or god-brother or something, was recruited by Terry Price and played all 4 years under Price at Auburn. With Price being our DL coach, that's another plus for us. We'll see what he does, but I could see plenty of reasons why he'd choose us at this point and feel comfortable with it.

ETA: He could end up at State simply because he just likes it more, but the depth chart and position coach are the two big reasons why I could see it making sense for him to go with us.

I think Price was the big factor. Our only good DE is McPhee and he's a Sr. None of the other guys are anything special - or at least haven't shown it yet.

Comfort with your position coach is big, even though the reality is that he might not be there a year from now (true for every position coach)

You could say that's true for every coach period, not just position coaches, given the amount of moving they do, but I guess moreso for position coaches, because they get promotions or take other jobs. We've been lucky with basically no attrition on our staff since Nutt was hired outside of Rocker leaving for Auburn and being replaced by Price, but it's rare you go 2 years with that little attrition on a staff.

ETA: The one thing you can say for Price at least is that he was Tuberville's DE coach for 14 years before coming to Ole Miss under Nutt last year after Tuberville lost his job. So obviously he's not aspiring to become a coordinator, and he's shown he's willing to stay with a coach for a long time, but in most cases you will go through at least 2 position coaches in a 4-5 year college career.
