Thoughts from Blacksburg Fans

I was looking on VHSL website and I seen where they posted the All State teams and when I looked at 3A I was genuinely amazed. Unless I'm blind it's reading to me that Blacksburg won a state championship on one first team all state DB, an amazing kicker, and two return men. Other than that....NOTHING. There was no lineman, no running backs, or any Linebackers that made first or second team All-State. I have no invested interest in Blacksburg just extreme respect but it dosent seem possible to come that far on a DB and special teams.

All State teams in Virginia have always raised a lot of questions. Normally there is a lot of politics involved. Team record or player stats are not as important as one would think.

Most of all conf region and state teams are usually for the seniors and voted on before the playoffs. . I like the TEAM awards best anyway. But I will say this I'd take Brad Shelton over anyone on the all state team

He got shafted.. i think several for blacksburg on the defensive side got shafted, but i guess if its done before then you really dont know. Blacksburg defense kept phoebus in check and stopped an 70 point average team.

Staunton River had an OL and the POY RB.

It is amazing that Blacksburg and Salem both won state title from same district and they have no players. They do have great programs though.

Blacksburg got the short end of the stick because of a few reasons.

1. The conference team was likely picked at the end of the regular season, so at the time Bburg was 5-5.
2. You can't make the regional team without being 1st team all conference. The regional team was likely picked after the first 3 weeks of playoffs before the Bruins manhandled Phoebus and SR.
3. You can't make the state team without being on the regional team. So a lot of deserving Bruins were left off. Beck, Terry, & Shelton are no brainers in my opinion and I'm sure there are others that deserve consideration

Hopefully the coaches will use common sense when the VHSCA team comes out and Virginia Preps will also be able to pick their team after seeing the Bruin players full body of work.
