Thoughts on another stellar UK season opener

*Fire Mark Stoops. Give Stoops time. Be patient. It's just one game. Bigger. Stronger. Faster. Ah, Kentucky football is back!

*Coach Stoops was already having issues selling tickets to his dumpster fire. I imagine that problem just got exacerbated. Look for a lot of metal bleachers posing as UK football fans over the next three months. With no marquee games on the home schedule (unless you count the Dawgs), UK football fans are likely already thinking about ditching the season. Honestly, it's hard to blame them.

*I think most fans expected the front seven to resemble a train wreck this year. After one game, I think Chernobyl might be more appropriate. That group is going to seriously struggle against any opponent that's remotely decent. The talent level is stunningly non-existent. The depth is so bad, it makes the talent level of the starters look like the 70's Steelers (LOL). Point being, in year four of the Stoops project, the front seven is probably less talented than it's been since he's been here.

*I don't know how much culpability Coach Eliot has when it comes to the Jimmy's and Joe's at his disposal, but he's been terrifyingly putrid in his 37 games as Kentucky's defensive coordinator. Eliot hasn't met many opponents that aren't able to rip his scheme apart. Not even the existence of Dupree and Z. Smith could save this guy from horrid numbers.

*Watching Drew Barker last night was like watching a replay of Patrick Towles Kentucky career. We saw some GREAT stuff. We saw some stunningly awful stuff. Big picture, Kentucky's young QB did enough to leave me encouraged. Not so much in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of his ability to play QB. Overall though, he has a LONG way to go. Kind of disappointing considering he's in his 3rd year as a collegian. Then again, he's also on his 3rd offensive coordinator.

*I've said time and time again that if we see Mosier and Meadows on the field at tackle, we're in trouble. I don't like to outright rip Kentucky football players, but these two guys aren't even in the ballpark of being good enough to play at this level. One of the funny things about UK football...guys like Mosier and Meadows turn into summertime and fall camp beasts. We always hear about the improvement. You know, bigger, stronger, faster. Then September rolls around and they look just like they did ten months ago. Kentucky needs two new tackles ASAP. Start freshman. Hell, start two random dudes that post here.

*Self inflicted wounds. My goodness. The dropped INT was sickening. It couldn't have been an easier ball to catch. Three huge turnovers. Special teams....hahahaha! I have literally nothing else left to say about UK's special teams. What else is left to say really?

*Big picture, we're 37 games into the Stoops project. Another Barnhart "head coach on training wheels" hire. After game #37, I think it's fair to say we've seen virtually nothing that could lead a reasonable person to believe he's going to be the guy that turns this disaster around. Coming off of a season in which Kentucky's sideline resembled a circus far too often, Stoops somehow pissed away a 25-point lead in the home opener.

Erik, you're one of the most respected and level headed posters when it comes to our football team. What's your opinion on whether or not Stoops is coaching us next season?

Have said since last season and all off season KY's Oline is in trouble if Meadows and Mosier were the starters. Young has to play and it's horribly frustrating Leavitt appears to be a miss.

KY's biggest issue is its lack of recruiting at DLine. It's been a massive failure and the lack of development of Elam has compounded the problem. The 3-4 scheme continues to be a complete dud. The lbers are being attacked every play by Olineman because of how poor the DLine has been and it is not going to change. Secondary constantly has to make plays after the front 7 have been beat.

They can change all of their schemes today and the same problem is not going away. Until the staff can recruit and sign dlineman in droves who are big, mean, and nasty its not going to matter.

Stoops is toast and he knows it. It's year 4 and the DLine may be worse than it was when he got to UK. He and Elliott do not have any answers left. Their scheme solely relies on having elite talent and they do not have it and never will.

catmanC15, it will take a complete and total meltdown for Barnhart to replace Stoops after this season. Fans will have to completely stop showing up (like at the end of the Joker era). The team will probably have to go 3-9 or worse.

Maybe a bigger factor, money. If Kentucky fires him before 1 December 2017 (without cause), they'd owe him $12 million. That's too big a hit to take IMO. Thus, I don't see him getting **** canned after 2016. Maybe after '17 though.

Barney screwed us on Stoops' contract. If the fans want change its going to have to be a Joker type boycott the rest of the season. If UK gets blown out next week in Gainsville, commonwealth will be very empty for the New Mexico game

Unless a miracle happens and this team turns it around, it's going to be an extremely painful next two seasons for both Mitch and Stoops that both will be begging to be let go.

I know its a bad day for UK fans, but something I think many are overestimating is the recruiting. Its certainly better than it was a few years ago, but look where UK's best offensive and defensive players are from, Westery is from FL and Boom is from Ga. UK is recruiting Ohio hard, tOSU isn't recruiting Ohio hard. There are 5-6 excellent players there every year, but most of those are going to tOSU or UM occasionally. Morrow is doing a great job in Ohio on the recruiting front, but look at who else is recruiting Ohio hard, Bama, Clemson, Michigan or even tOSU aren't. Meyer understands he needs defensive speed that just isn't there, he recruits Ga, Fl, as hard as anyone other than maybe UGA. That is my theory anyway, may not be right, but I believe it. Fast skill players are everywhere, but those fast LBers and DL aren't. UGA played 4 true frosh DL yesterday, plus 2 true frosh on the DL, They certainly didn't dominate, but they held their own and all 6 of them are from Ga. For UK to improve defensively, I think they are going to have to change their focus on recruiting. No recruiting Ga or Fl won't be easy because every team in the country is doing it, but UK has some connections in Georgia.

I do disagree about what you said with Barker. I think he mostly played a great game. I said before the game he was gonna have a mistake where he fumbles in the pocket and an INT. But i also said he was going to show long stretches of brilliance. He mad many great plays with his legs where towles would've been sacked or made some crazy mistake, he avoided some sacks with some nice throw aways and showed the ability to extend the play and make plays.. All around showed to be a million times more mentally tougher player than towles as a sophomore which I haven't ever seen with Towles against decent competition besides the game in the swamp a couple years back.

Remember what Woodson looked like as a sophomore? I think Barker looked great and showed a ton of promise. You can only do so much with an offensive line that bad. With that said he played a helluva game IMO and showed mental toughness. Completed a bunch of long passes with pinpoint accuracy and remember one that was under thrown to an open receiver but he was open and he just made sure the play was made which I like seeing, make sure the play made, some down the middle which I never saw from towles. He really did look good. I blame the second half on how we didn't gameplan for how USM would adjust. They switched up schemes and we weren't prepared for it. Our coaches have no clue on how to adjust. I do think Barker will be an All Time great at UK when it's all said and done.

Speed didn't appear to be the problem on defense. Gap integrity on the defensive line and assignment play at the linebackers was. I don't know how many more f*&%ing times I can watch another sweep around the tackle where our outside linebackers are all crashing inside without shooting someone. What we've got is a scheme and coaching problem, not a speed problem.

Stoops ought to ask Rich Brooks to join the staff this year and help them with some adjustments especially at halftime. Brooks could be an unpaid consultant and I bet he could help straighten this thing out, talent level not withstanding. Mosier needs to sit and Landon Young needs to start. Maybe that would save Schlarman's job. Our o line is horrid.

I don't have ESPNU on my program so couldn't watch last night. Speed might not be the right term, explosiveness might be a better term or quickness. In the past, UK's DL has not been very explosive, they are getting beat off the ball. LBers crashing is a lack of discipline and trust in teammates, someone has to set the edge every play, it has been an issue at UGA too. But my point is DL have to be quick and explosive, not just big guys. It is what seperated tOSU from the Bama's and Florida's when they played for NC in the BCS era. Meyer is recruiting the south as hard as the instate schools are, and it's showing on the field.

Last night's bunch did not look like a very talented bunch. At least not on SEC standards. They showed flashes of being able to make good plays. I think some of the players in the secondary have talent. The problem is even the best DBs are going to give up plays when you the defense is getting gashed running the football and the line is so bad it will never get consistent pressure on the QB.

Our biggest problem, is that we run to clean of a football team. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that, Barnhart forbids them from even taking gummy vitamins. When the smaller lines of opposing team push us around and seemingly get stronger while the game wears on, what does that tell you?

Grumpyolddawg,you get it. Kentucky's problems start up front with the defensive line. Until we start to recruit just average defensive lineman we are going to continue to lose. I have to believe that both Stoops and Elliot understand this problem, the question is why we can't seem to recruit on the defensive line. Or more importantly, why after 3 seasons those same coaches haven't developed any average defensive linemen.

we have a head coach who honestly thought it was a good idea to not have a Special Teams Coach last year. The guy is a moron and always will be

Grumpyolddawg I think speed was an issue. Our DE and linebackers were not able to contain the end-around again. We countered that by having our DL run backwards away from the LOS at the snap of the ball. We are in god awful shape with both our lines, other than that we're pretty good.

I said this all off season. I said if Schlarman is still here our OL will still suck. I said if Mosier and Meadows are the OT's we will suck. Start Young. He will make mistakes but Mosier does not have the foot speed to be an SEC LT. Move Stenberg or GAA to RT. They can't be any worse than Meadows. And no I don't trust the coaches judgments to start the best players.

Absolutely correct but don't forget we were supposed to have Tubman, Meant, and Hatcher for this game and that is not including the fantasy Provitt.

So have you watched the replay? I see you players making young player mistakes. I saw a TE miss two critical blocks on a series that results in a Barker fumble. I also saw a young defense that was celebrating rather than hydrating in the first half and we paid the price in the 2nd half. I saw a no call hold on 3 and 7 with 2:40 to go in the 3rd quarter that allowed USM to pick up a 1st and later a score.

Not giving up on this young team or Stoops and Gran. I do fault Eliot for not being in a dime prevent with a minute to go in first half. Barker learned a valuable lesson as well as the entire team. We must get more bodies in the rotation on defense. While Kobie Walker made a lot of tackles he was out of position a lot. They must clean up a lot of things but I don't see the sky falling like most of you posters. Other than not scoring in the second half which was obviously a huge problem we needed to use a big punishing back to pound the football and for whatever reason we chose to not go that route.

UKErik; do you know whether or not we could retain Stoops on staff in some other capacity until 1 Dec 2017; and go ahead and bring in another head coach? I just don't believe that Stoops and Eliot are going to get it done. I have never had faith in Eliot. I had assumed that Stoops would be the man behind the defense, and he may be. But together they are doing a poor job with the defense.

I can't agree with this. Barker threw for over 300 yards had 4 TD's to one INT when UK was pressed for a score. His QB rating for the game was very high. His rhythm was totally disrupted the second half and he did give our defense a 25 point cushion that they couldn't protect. To me Barker was the best thing all night in his firts game as the unquestioned starter and leader of the offense.

Was it a poor job in the first half? Their play in the first half got the job done for 29 minutes.

Stoops is not a good coach. UK needs a good coach to do anything as we are NEVER going to outrecruit the top SEC programs. So we need a guy that can outcoach a more talented team. Stoops couldn't outcoach a peewee team coach IMO. We are screwed, forget about a bowl game as now our only shot is to win all 4 of Vandy, SC, Missouri, MSU and of course APSU and NMSU (I'm giving Stoops those 2 as SURELY even he can't screw that up? Right?!!) and I Just don't see this bunch going 100% in those 4 key games. They could...but they will pull a UK in at least one of them guys.

And I don't even want to hear someone say "Well they could beat FL or UGA or UL" uh no they can't and I"m laughing at you for even saying it and will laugh at anyone who says it on this board. In fact my response to anyone saying that will simply be the LMAO icon everytime. That is all, just disgusted in year 4 we can't beat a CUSA team at home with a freaking 35-10 lead. I'm still trying to figure out how we let someone score on their last 7 possessions of a football team (If it was not the last 7 I apologize but I thought the announcers said 7 straight, but I guess they took a knee at the end for the MERCY RULE!) and our majestic offense was SHUT OUT in the 2nd half. Despite our pathetic defensive display simply scoring 10 points would have been enough to hold on to win IMO but no, once Barker fumbled that ball, the game was over.

I digress, not much else to say. Our only saving grace could be how bad the SEC is. Alabama is going to cakewalk to the SEC Title and if they beat Ole Miss in 2 weeks on the road, they are going 13-0 heading into the playoff for sure IMO. Rant over, and apologies.

For a period of time, after the first So. Miss. touchdown, I thought the defense had arrived. Then, for the rest of the game, including most of the second quarter, they looked worse than last year. I could not help but wonder whether or not the HC put some brakes on the offense after we got to 35.
