Thoughts on Arkansas and the season.

Well, that was bad. I know some people have gone off the deep end re: Mullen since Saturday, and I appreciate your opinions, but I am not there yet. I will say, however, that I think Mullen absolutely deserves some criticism for the offensive output this year. It is year 3 and we put up 210 yards against Arkansas? Barely break 300 total yards over the course of 2 straight SEC weeks? That is just bad. I realize Bama was included, but still. People are talking about OL and WR, and that is justified, but that is only part of the problem. So, what is the problem?<div>
</div><div>1. Recruiting. If our OL is really this bad, sending us right back into the dark days of Croomesque offensive output, this is really an indictment of Mullen and Co. We all knew there was going to be some dropoff, but for the coaches to not forsee it being this bad is a huge gaffe. Same goes for the WR. However, I think the WR bashing is slightly overblown. I just can't believe this group is that bad from a pure skill standpoint. I do believe that Clark, Smith and Bumphis would all be 2nd or 3rd receivers on most of the other SEC rosters. I think they are being used poorly and coached poorly. </div><div>
</div><div>2. Scheme/Playcalling. Still way too many mistakes here. Russell got sacked a couple of times Saturday before ANY of his receivers were out of there breaks. This wasn't because the D got there that fast, it was because we were running ridiculous slow-developing routes when we know the OL is a liability. Favre comes in and we inexplicably start running shorter routes, including the quick throw to Robert Johnson, which has proven to be one of our best offensive plays (yet Johnson stays on the bench). It is like we try to design more difficult plays just because Russell has a big arm, and forget that we still don't have an OL. As another poster said earlier, we schemed ourselves into a couple of sacks in other ways also. One time Hemphill was lined up over Bequette I think, and we pulled him into the 5 gap (where he found nobody to block) when he could have just stood where he lined up and prevented the sack. We are failing at getting the ball to our playmakers in space, which is the foundation of the spread offense. 80% of our completions are to a stationary receiver with no prospect of running after the catch. The RBs are grossly underused in the passing game. Our situational playcalling is just bizarre. Going for it on 4th down on our side of the field was one thing, the play we called was even worse. The red zone series vs. Bama, the end game series v. Auburn, I could go on and on. Given the obvious handicaps we have at OL and WR, we can't afford to compound that with bad coaching. </div><div>
</div><div>3. Personnel. The QB carousel has to stop. At least it has to stop going like it is now. I don't have a problem bringing Favre in like we did for the first touchdown where we only asked him to run, but I still think I would let Tubby or Bumphis or Ballard take the ball in a pure wildcat if we are going to do that. Forget the threat of a pass, we aren't a true passing threat anyway. Russell is our best QB and he should have the opportunity to finish drives, particularly when he has the hot hand. Tubby and R. Johnson need to see the field more. I know Tubby puts the ball on the ground, but the performance of our offense this year makes the risk necessary. Marcus Green needs to be relegated to a blocker/safety valve only. We are wasting snaps running corner routes and deep seam routes with him. </div><div>
</div><div>That said, I am fine with just going to a bowl game. Assuming we beat Ole Miss and get to 6-6, I am content with that, particularly given the schedule we played this year. The season was wrecked in Week 2 and it is what it is. I just hope we figure some things out and a better contingency plan next year when we will again be undermanned on the OL. </div>

If they get to a bowl game nothing else matters. We have been to 15 bowl in all of our football history. Any time you can go back to back bowlingthings are good and more good things will come.

win projection of 7 by one game if we take care of business this Saturday so I am a little disappointed but still optimistic for the long term. The biggest concern for me is the head scratching decisions on offense as of late. I think Mullen is trying too hard to trick or out think the other team and he just needs to get back to basics and execute.

don't you know mullen is kicking himself in the nutts everytime he looks in the mirror.

He could have stayed at Florida and been handed a gold mine, one year later...

he comes to MSU thinking he is going to win 3 years and be out and bama, arkansas, auburn, and lsu beat his *** 12 times and is in the strongest conference in the strongest divison ...now he is just hoping he can hang on to the program.

I mean you don't even have to win your divison in the SEC and you can play for a National Title ...go figure
couple of years ago a 2 lost team won the National Title from the SEC

I like where our program is headed... i don't understand some of the hair-brained things that go on saturdays but when he speaks and explains himself I don't always agree but I understand what he was thinking and what he is trying to accomplish... Recruiting def has to pick up if we have to play those 4 teams every year, but we have to win at least 6 until it gets there ...recruiting don't happen overnight in MS

best quote from saturday ...if arkansas is having this much trouble with fletcher cox they better get ready cause lsu has at least 8 fletcher cox's

1) I think with OLine recruiting, that we missed on a left tackle and were left scrambling. The injuries and constant shuffling has taken its toll on what would have been an average group to below average quick. We were thin last year on the line, but we avoid catastrophic injuries, unlike this year. I think the coaching staff was crossing their fingers on injuries, and it didn't pan out. Part of the problem, however, is that you can't just bring anyone in to play OL in our system, you need guys who are more smart than physical coming in. Blown assignments from the shuffling is the biggest problem up front. I think that will dramatically improve as the younger guys (hopefully) get bowl practices, spring practices and fall practices before the next season. We do need a couple-three JUCO guys, for depth, but you don't want to over-do it.<div>
</div><div>2) The scheme all starts up front and with depth. I can't comment on the slow-developing routes, because I don't know what the coaches/players are seeing, but I have to imagine that it was a reaction to something they thought might be on its way. I wonder, however, if an offensive coordinator change isn't on its way. Something we need to really think about, because I really don't think Koenig is seeing stuff as well as we might hope. I don't know how much the WR coach really has a say on routes during the game (probably none), but I don't think he really is the problem. At the end of the day, players have to make the catch.</div><div>
</div><div>3) Iagreeon the carousel to a degree, but the problem here is this is the only thing we really make other teams have to practice special. We really don't scare teams in any other facet because they know that our o-line is not up to the standard defenses from SEC caliber opponents.</div><div>

as it relates to Mullen being some kind of offensive mastermind. I realize we are somewhat personnel limited on offensive but there is no excuse for us not having performed any better than we have this year on that side of the ball. I mean some of the things we do like trying to use Relf as a pocket passer with no roll outs (continued to do this even in the first series against Bama) or flipping QBs like they are WRs or seemingly only wanting to use slow developing passing plays when our OL is rather porous certainly leaves you scratching your head.

On a related topic though its also amazing how we just can't compete with Arky in Arky seemingly ever. I know some of it is playing them between AL and OM but our lousy play when we go up there has been a consistent theme from Sherrill to Croom to now Mullen. In all our trips up there all we have to show for it is one tie with them in like the first year they joined the league. Even our best teams over the past 20 years have laid eggs up there. No one should ever predict that we win a game against them in the state of Arkansas unless you are just into making yourself look like a complete idiot.
