I think first and foremost that we at MSU should learn from our mistakes in the past. One of the major problems we made with Croom was we hired a guy with no HC experience. You can't do that in todays SEC. If you look around the conference there are only three guys who did not have HC experience at some level- Richt, Fulmer (who was hired in a different era and is a dinosaur), and Croom. Now with the Lane Kiffen hire, there is only Richt. While we may not be one of the more historically successful programs in the SEC, we can afford to go get a guy like Peterson. We can not afford, nor do we have to take a chance on someone that is not proven. This is a critical hire for Byrne, as much or even moreso than the baseball coach. We can not afford to screw this up. Thank God LT is no longer here to screw this up for us.
Now, on that front- when we hired Croom, LT said something to the effect of Croom being the HC for 25 years. If we have a coach that makes it to 12, that would be long enough. Most likely they will stay from 4-6. We need to find someone that is looking to move up. We need to find someone young and energetic, but not stupid like O. We need to find someone that will connect with the fans and do little things like bring back maroon helmets. We need someone that understands that Ole Miss is our main rival and not Alabama and gets the team ready for a respectable showing for the Egg Bowl every year.
That leads me to this- cut the Bear Bryant/Bama ties and cut the Texas A&M ties. The fact is Bama people look down on us, and everyone else for that matter. Someone from Boise, Idaho or Tulsa, Oklahoma is not going to have the "poor ol' State" mentality and try to keep it permeating throughout our fans while we're "privilaged" with 3 win seasons and doing things the right way.
We need someone that can recruit, not only against Ole Miss, but against the SEC and keeps our players in state. Someone that does things like recruit Jackson instead of not paying attention to the city at all, someone that recruits players that aren't midgets, and someone that recruits based on need rather than say that a class is deep at a certain position and sign 47 DE's.
We need an exciting offense that works and can be run by players that aren't in the NFL, an o-line that can block, an aggressive defense that attacks an offense and expoloits weaknesses, and solid ST players. A QB coach would be nice as well.
We need someone that the rest of the SEC hates. Someone that people say "I hate that SOB". Someone that will run it up on SELU. Someone that will beat people in C-USA and take us to bowls every year.
Hopefully, we will find that coach.
