As long as one of the two practices were with out pads and just Helmets and shorts I don't understand what the difficulty of practicing twice a day.

Seems to me breaking up the time of the practices instead of one longer one would be more beneficial to the players.

Used to hate 2 a days. Hot hot hot late afternoon practice. Productivity drastically drops in the heat of the day but methinks it won't decrease any issues 2 a days are thought to cause.

we will be fresher in the second half of the season

mark my words .. we may enter the 4th quarter of the Iowa game down 3-4 TDs but will be fresher in the 4th and only lose by 2 TDs .. we will outplay them in the 4th quarter due in large part to this change in philosophy.

Plus if you are clearly only here to cash checks why would you practice two times per day when just one practice pays the same

I honestly don't think we will be down going into the 4th quarter this time.

If the idea was to get the body used to heat, six weeks later its all gone away . In the older days we didn't have all these summer work outs, so it seemed two a days got us in shape faster. Players come in to practice maintained or increased now; so why tear the body down? Again, six weeks later, you are functioning at the level of your " then " workouts. That leaves learning and repitition, which are already increased in other ways also. GBR

They are more than a month out from their first game and will actually have more practice time than ever before. They also spend 10 hours per day with coaches in meetings, lifting, and workouts.

I can promise that's far more beneficial than 2.5 hours of practice at 7 am, taking naps, and then coming back at 3 pm.

Besides, these dudes are already in shape. Power 5 conditioning in the Summer is relentless. They don't have the need to fit in extra running at practice. They are still going to run sprints and condition more than say October, but it's not necessary like it was perhaps 30, 20, or even 10 years ago.

Found this article that contains "recommendations" based on a 2014 study. How this translates to NCAA by-laws I am not certain. It is not just a change on two practices a day, there is much more.

Thanks for all the impute...

Extra week makes up for it for sure, but after the 4th week most players say their ready to play a real game.
