Thoughts on UNC "making" the NCAAT?

Disclaimer, I don't consider play-in games to be part of the tournament. If you're playing to earn a seed in the tournament, by definition you are not in.

That aside, there's always whining every year about teams that don't make vs some who did. However, UNC's Q1 record was absolutely abysmal at 1-12. Complicating the issue, UNC's AD chairs the selection committee and he earns a $68,000 bonus with their selection. I have to assume he was recused from discussion of UNC's selection (right)? Nevertheless, this one seems particularly egregious.

That said, I don't have a dog in the fight, but it would be funny to see them go on a little run in the tournament and make the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 and tick people off.

I hate that it’s UNC but it doesn’t surprise me. On the other hand, I don’t get a 6-12 conference record (Texas) getting in. They don’t deserve a chance to play for a title with that record.

For me, I’m fine with the ACC getting 4 teams in while the B10 gets 9 and the SEC 14. Personally I’d like to see a few more mid-majors get bids than schools like Texas or UNC. Always teams that had great seasons but have one loss in a conference tournament that keeps them out.

I’d also like to do away with the Play-in games, especially for 11 seeds. It’s a pretty big advantage for an 11 to have a game already played going against a 6. Just pick 64 and enough with it.

I don't believe either UNC or Texas have any business being in the tournament. As another poster mentioned ,it denies some real good mid-majors a deserved spot. George Mason comes to mind.

Exactly... a mid major school that won the regular season championship but lost in the tournament deserves it more that a Texas or a UNC. Take UT Chattanooga for example. Are they better, likely not but it's still more fair.

What a joke. Somebody was driven to tears about the prospects of not having the Tar Heels in the tourney and had to make sure that didn`t happen. Hopefully they will lose early.

I know I'm in the minority, but I'd be in favor of a 32-team tournament. Those other 32 teams don't have any business playing for a national title.

The CFP should have learned a lesson from the NCAAT. It's currently 64 teams (not counting play-in games) and you still have teams complain about not making it. If they expand it to 76 or whatever they are looking at, teams will still complain about not making it.

Just go ahead and make the NCAAT an "Open" type tournament. Any team that wants to be in it can announce they are in it and then let the NCAA set the brackets and let the eliminations begin. It may take until July to finish the tournament but the most important thing is that no one's feelings would be hurt by being left out.

Sports in general have become a joke regarding how many teams qualify for playoffs and tournaments.

On the other hand, South Alabama got the call to invite them to play in the NIT. Their spot was available b/c UC Riverside was already committed to the CBI. However, subsequent to that call, UC Riverside got out of their CBI commitment and accepted an NIT bid. NIT called South Alabama back to say "uhhhh, sorry, you're not actually invited" even though the coach had already told the players.

And don't forget about the pay-to-play post-season tournaments like the CBI. It's just beyond absurd. You couldn't make the field of 64 for the NCAAT, or the field of 32 for the NIT. So instead of accepting reality you pay $30,000 to play in the CBI and "keep your season alive".

I really don't mind it because anyone on the bubble has a reason to be left home. Who got left out? West Virginia with 13 losses? North Texas with 8 losses in a very weak American Athletic this year? UAB with 12 losses in that same weak American? An example of that was last night. Everyone was going on about UNC being put in the tournament and they beat the brakes off of San Diego State. UNC had a slow start and have 12 losses, but they have played well of late and got 3 wins in a major conference tournament. Many times that gets you in.

I disagree on Chattanooga. They won 25 games, but they didn't beat anybody either. Their best OOC win is Morehead State. A Mid-Major needs to do more in November and December if they want to get in the dance as an At-Large.

Go back to 32 teams? Hell no. The play in games are pointless but 64 teams and the upsets that happen are what makes the tournament great. Don’t be surprised to see UNC win another game or two, whether they should have been in or not.
