This thread is inspired by the many references to CNN, MSNBC and Fox, which presumably people watch if they reference them.

I don't have cable. I have a Roku, which gets me some free channels that I watch some but not too much. I probably watch Youtube more than any other Roku channel. I also have a digital antenna so I get the major networks. The last couple falls I've gotten Sling TV during football season since it offers ESPN and ESPN2 but I might not do that again this fall.

Fox News and MSNBC isn't on Sling but CNN is. When I get Sling I watch CNN some but less and less as time passes. The model the cable news networks offer of 8 minute segments with nobody getting to talk uninterrupted for more than about 15 seconds seems more and more ridiculous to me. And the yelling and verbal fights does too. It's anti-intellectual and anti-informative. Or so it seems to me.

So when someone mentions one of the cable news networks it's not something I watch. I'd be interested in hearing what others have and use.

ETA: I forgot to mention that as of a month ago I get Netflix too. I don't watch it that much but it's nice to have for when I want to see something. The selection is so large. The fact that you can pay $8 per month and have access to so much is amazing. If you were into watching video Netflix would be paradise.

I have cable. I get a **** ton of channels with an add on sports package. I have Hulu and Netflix too. My cable provider got rid of THE BEST channel, Comedy Central.

As far as news goes, Rachel Maddox does her show differently than the typical panel of both conservative and liberal guests that argue back and forth and interrupt each other.

She was first to report various Russian financial connections to trump. She was first to report the tarmac meetings last year between trump and the Russian fertilizer king. She does a lot of research. She reported the illegal payments to Flynn from Turkey before Flynn was fired. You have to watch with a grain of salt.

The news source that I am least skeptical about is NPR.

You're cable company got rid of Comedy Central? Wow, I would have thought that one would be untouchable.

Back when I had cable I had non-digital cable. Every few months the cable company would send me a letter saying, basically, "We're taking a couple channels off of regular cable, but you can get them if you buy digital cable." It was an obvious ploy to get me to buy the more expensive digital cable.

I have DirecTV's streaming service, Netflix, and digital antenna.

I use Netflix for some of their original programming, but mostly for older shows.
I use digital antenna for locals, PBS, etc
I split use with the Streaming service with family members when they stay up in Canaan Valley. I mostly use it for sports, cable series, HBO shows and, currently, DIY show binges (for reasons I can't grasp). I do not see the appeal of the cable "news" channels at all.

I've thought about Sling TV"s service, but what do you do about Fox Sports 1, Root, ESPN U, etc.?

I get FS1 and the U with DirecTV's streaming service. Will go to a friend/bar for Root.

Even with a streaming service that doesn't have FS1 or U, a nice pal should be able to give you a login for their respective Live apps. Root is garbage.

I've got every channel I can get on FiOS + AppleTV. I watch my appleTV mostly for the shows on the HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc. also use it for Netflix, ESPN, YouTube, Disney for the kids. I really only pay for cable so I can get all of the movie channels. I'd cut completely to just alacarte if AppleTV would secure the streaming only options for everything I want.

The regular Sling TV is $20 per month but I think there are other packages you can get for $5 more. ESPN and ESPN2 are in the regular Sling package but if you get the extra sports package maybe FS1 is in there. I need to look into that because if it is I may get it this fall since it has WVU games. I think there was only one WVU game on ESPN or ESPN2 last fall but I think FS1 has most Big 12 games so maybe I could get more if I got FS1.
