I still like my 4 4-school divisions best, with one permanent non-division opponent in football.

Just for clarification, is this a list that was proposed at the SEC Media days, extracted from an article in the press, or authored by the OP.
BTW: UK projection makes the least amount of sense to me. UK not having border state Tennessee as permanent ?

I agree. They even have a whiskey barrel or something that they play for each year.

however, they were probably hesitant to put two, historic cupcakes in any one team’s permanent 3.

It's attractive to us, but they don't owe us an annual game with Georgia. They don't owe us anything. We are fortunate to be in the league and have no natural rivalries therein. They can do with us whatever they please. We have no leverage. We are p!$$-@nts.
Disagree. We have had some knock down drag out battles with Jawja for decades. And it’s a natural rivalry just geographically. They may not owe us anything of which I agree but UGA is a rivalry game.
I hate that we are paired with Missouri.

We are their wannabe rivals - no more than that. If they wind up as a permanent opponent for us, it will be due to grace and not merit.

Is this the working template or your projection?
This is what some insider said was being discussed. Obviously I am as skeptical of insiders as you likely would be. Some know something, others repeat gossip from bar room conversations. But looking at it there is some logic, although the Aggies would want to switch Texas with some other pairing.

Texas will gladly trade you the Aggies for Missouri.

South Carolina, Florida and Auburn gives Georgia 3 border state rivalries. Makes perfect sense - which is why it won't happen.
We aren't rivals with them in any way, shape, form, or fashion. Tennessee also borders Georgia and they've been playing Georgia a lot longer than we have - and with a lot more on the line. We'd need at least 50 more continuous years with Georgia and a lot more competitiveness with them in order to ever be one of their rivals.

Georgia has been a natural rival my whole life it seems, certainly at least since I moved here in 1982. I can't think of another SEC team that's more of a "natural" rival. But whatever. I'll be watching anyway.

So will I - when they play. I'm just saying they look at us a whole lot differently than we look at them.
They hate our freaking guts. I know plenty of dawg fans and they act like our game doesn’t matter and they expect to blow us out until it’s but cutting time and then they are as bad or worse than Clem fans. They are a rival. Sure they look down on us, let’s be honest, most of our long time rivals do, because we’ve sucked for the vast majority of our existence. But it is a rivalry.

The ONLY WAY I'd even think about accepting that would be for us to switch Missouri to Kentucky for Georgia, and Georgia to switch Kentucky for us. IOW's the following...

South Carolina: UF, UT & UGA
UGA: AU, UF & USC
KY: Miss. State, Ark & Missouri
Missouri: Oklahoma, Ark. & KY.

JMHOFWIW

I don't think it has anything to do with "merit" or "owing" anybody. Part of the reason the SEC is so successful is because of geographic rivalries. Growing up in the upstate, I knew a lot of UGA and UT fans in that area. It's part of what makes college football fun. I'd hate to give up those annual games just so we could play Texas or Oklahoma more often. I don't know any TX or OU fans. I don't know any Missouri fans either. I know that a TX/UGA game is a bigger deal for TV than a UGA/SC game, but the TV revenue is going to be fine in the conference. Butts in seats still matter.

Exactly!! It makes Perfect Sense really for all schools within this discussion, is mutually beneficial for the specific schools within this conversation AS WELL AS the conference as a whole, Which is exactly why I posted this above!! And, when considered in whole, coupled with what we've previously seen from our conference in regards to OUR specific benefits, odds are it just ain't gonna happen!!!

JMHO of course!

Fine. I understand, but don't put us and Georgia in the "rivals" category. We just don't fit. They have their instate rival, and they have their longstanding and hated border and conference rival to their south. They have another team to their north that they have always had to get past if they want to be at the top. Then they have us, a mere nuisance game and a Johnny-come-lately to the conference. We rate low. It's their established perspective I'm talking about, not our aspiring perspective, which is pitiful. We need this game; they don't need it at all.

Sure, Georgia, is blessed (or cursed) to be surrounded by SEC teams at all of its borders and probably possess more "rivals" than any other team. My point is that the SEC would do well to keep geographic proximity a priority in future scheduling. It feeds the emotional aspects of college football fandom in a way that is absent from, say, the NFL. At a time when college football is experiencing lower physical attendance across the board, this seems like a no-brainer priority.

We need proximate opponents more than they do. Not only are they good, but they are already set with proximate attractive opponents. That isn't to say you won't get your wish. They are the only conference state contiguous with us. Who knows what the SEC is thinking? For sure Georgia will play Florida and Auburn every year. If Georgia wants to pitch for a particular situation, they have a far better chance of getting it than we do. Maybe they'd like a relative breather.

If our overall competitiveness is what makes us rivals with other teams, then we wouldn’t have any. I think most people at Carolina agree that Clemson is by far public enemy #1 to us, as we are to them. And that UGA is our border rival. Maybe to UGA, Florida is their more heated boarder rival? I don’t know. What sucks about it is that both rivals are competing for National Championships all the time and take us to the wood shed during the regular season. While we have been lucky to even make a bowl. And can’t get ranked in the top25. I’ve been hoping for change since like 2014…… 9 years!

We have beaten UGA 5 times since 2010. TN has beaten UGA a total of 6 times since 2000. I would say we are a rival with UGA border and otherwise. I was in school when big George was there. We had some big games with Georgia. They hated us and we hated them. Don’t let anyone ever fool you, UGA fans love to beat South Carolina. All this ******** people spout is just that. I will miss playing Georgia annually

First SC-UGA game I remember was when we tied them 7-7 in 1962. I recall my brother and me in the car with our parents driving from Augusta, GA and hearing that on the radio. To me, hearing SC, from a basketball conference, fighting UGA from the mighty SEC to a draw, I thought was one of the coolest things. Someone above said we will never win a championship. So, it does not matter who we play. Maybe not (I'm an eternal optimist, though). But, for me personally, playing and beating Georgia is one of the pleasures of football life. It won't surprise me if it goes away. If somehow, we had sustained the success that Spurrier gave us for a stretch, we might have some pull in the conference. But, we are what we are, right now. Hopefully, Beamer will change that.

One more thing. Georgia fans love playing and beating us. The "Border Bash" before football season is an indication of that. If Beamer makes us nationally relevant as we were under Spurrier, the intensity of that game will become more so for UGA fans.

I think that SC is for sure a rival with Georgia. Just a lesser one tha GT, Florida and possibly UT and AU.

But when we're debating being the 4th or 5th rival of a team, I think "rival" is being diluted.

No, I suspect I won't get my wish, no matter how the scheduling works out. I have a feeling that within about 10 years, I won't find college football all that interesting any more.

If they are a rival, it is only in the sense that they are nearby and we play them every year. Those things don't make an actual rivalry any more than playing Wake Forest every year made them our rival during the ACC days. Georgia people disdain us way more than they hate us. Probably the only time they have hated us was when Spurrier was our coach - a special circumstance getting smaller in the rearview mirror every day.

Lol…….you should try having some. And Muschamp is gone also. Remind me again when Wake beat us 5 times in 12 years? UT has beat UGA 6 times in 22 years. Newer UGA fans see UT as a sure win.

Traditionally, USC has played UGA WAY more than ANY SEC school. While they may ‘own’ the rivalry, we’ve managed to make this game competitive most years, and won a little more recently. Since joining the SEC in 1992 USC is 12-20 vs UGA. UGA has won 67% of those games. Prior to joining the SEC the UGA series was 33-9-2, or they won 80% of the time, minus two ties. We’ve made some improvement on our part.

I wouldn't say they don't need it at all, but we do rank after Ga Tech, Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee. My understanding is that they did sponsor us for league membership when the SEC re-expanded to 12.

I'm sure they would rather play us than, say the Mississippis or Kentucky.
